Reaction Drive Campaign - New Ship Designs

I'm trying to recognise all the movies in there :)

2001
2010
Red Planet
Outland?
Event Horizon
Aliens? (the station at the end?)
Anything else?
(what, no "Moon"?)

What's the ship from 1:35 to 1:50 mins in the trailer?

And I would second the recommendation to check out Jovian Chronicles. Take out the mecha in it and you've pretty much got what you're making.

No Aliens, but there was a shot of NASA's Orion in orbit around the moon.

I'm still trying to get my files online, maybe tonight, or tomorrow ...

Yeah, that was after 1:50...
so where's that big pull out shot of the space station from at the end? I thought that was Aliens Special Edition... was that Event Horizon or something?

Yes, I think its the start of Event Horizon, that's Sam Neill eating in the window I think. The large ship at 1:30 is the Nightingale from Supernova. Please don't watch that film to see the clip in context :) It ain't pretty!

Ah right, I knew it looked familiar!

So I've heard :)

Also, you might want to throw it some of the ship exteriors from Sunshine in there too :)

Sunshine. Now that's a nice movie.

Would have been better without the random serial killer tangent near the end, but the rest of it was awesome. :)

"Moon" is another good one, if you haven't managed to see that yet.

Yes, definitely my favourite Traveller spin-off so far - are you going to sell this as a 3rd party product when it's done?>

cool :)

Its primarily for a Traveller campaign with my two sons, so I can point to the Moon and show them where the corporate chemical factory was they raided, or point out Jupiter and tell them they're going there next week!

But once playtested, bashed around and rewritten (the worlds need more writing, but only enough to provide good outlines, leaving detail for the GM) there is a possibility of release with a PDF publisher including some art and properly drawn deckplans (not my pen and paper scrawlings!!). But this is some way off yet.

That's a darn fine way to teach kids astronomy :)

Last year I worked out a campaign set in the Hyades cluster, and I would point out Aldebaran and such to the boys - until I realised it was only a few hundred million years old and so I ditched it all ... (no native animal or plant life - and I wanted it to feel right) :(

Neat trailer - your boys are very lucky !

What's the music on that trailer ? (Don't tell me you composed that too ? )

No, its a track from the computer game Command & Conquer (latest version). Composed by Steve Jablonsky, who did both Transofrmers movies. Absolutely beautiful music, but I thought I'd be pushing my luck using movie soundtracks. Check them all out on Spotify.

I have often wanted to do a traveller campaign using a tech level just like what you have, but with hyper or warp drive. I am leaning towards hyperdrive. This is just perfect, very commendable work.

For me, 2300AD never felt right because it put FTL drives in ships that were otherwise pretty realistic. I think the problem was just the choice of FTL they used though.

Things start to get interesting if you're using ships that need reaction mass and sending them FTL to other star systems. Systems can have very different velocities, and presumably the ship will need to adjust it's vector when it arrives - but it's entirely possible that it won't have enough reaction mass to do this ! That could mean you have systems that are effectively off-limits because they are on a vector that's unreachable with current reaction drive ships. Or maybe you have to use intermediate stepping stone systems to get to them…

I agree Gee4orce. I have a somewhat different campaign design set up. It is really a setting for a novel, but I like to play in them to see how they "work." Plus I can get all kinds of interesting ideas and twists from what the players do. A definite win/win.
