Random ID numbers, or not.

The number should be large enough to accommodate starship births.

If I'm not mistaken, Social Security Number does include non American origin.

I give up. Enjoy your pointless structured codes that just cause more work.
...more work for whom? I wouldn't ever use some kind of Imperial Citizen Number at my table, for the simple reason that it brings nothing to the, uh, table. Really, what problem is trying to be solved here?

I'm done on this topic. You all do what you want. I prefer realism, but I know others are different. It's the other way round in Elite Dangerous, where I'm the person that wants to have fun and everyone else wants to pour a bucket of cold realism over it :)

If you are the easy-going, fabulous, free-wheelin'-Franklin of their game then that speaks volumes about the population of Elite Dangerous*.

*The game where people travel 800 uninterrupted jumps over months through uninhabited space for fun. I speak as an OG kickstarter backer.

That is when you are supposed to take a singleship out beyond the edges of explored space to "get away from it all" until you yearn for another human (or whatever) face (or equivalent for other species). Then you return.
