Race Question

In season 5 Babylon 5 is assaulted by some race that Garibaldi gets info from the Gaim about. They even get a breaching pod onto B5 and have these red helmets. This is in one on the first few episodes of season 5.

Anybody know what race it was and if we have stats for them?

"At least two of these enormous ships were successfully reached and rerouted into these areas in search of aancient technologies instead of coloisable planets. One of these rare and massive ships, the EAS Coronado, never returned from its destination on the opposite end of Hyach space. Later, the mysterious 'Redhelms' would pour out of that sector and wage a sudden campaign of destruction that lead a path all the way to Babylon 5"

quote from Explorer ship entry. There is nothing really know about them and they did the one "campaign of destruction" and B5 was able to push there scouting force away so they changed derections and went into unknow areas were they left the B5 eye.

There is one theory that they are the Wen'dan Horde a race that had previously attempted to invade the B5 zone of space sometime in the last 1000 years but had their butts royally kicked by the Minbari...
Not sure where the stuff about the Wen'dan originally came from though they were mentioned by AoG in the GROPOS rulebook.

So then the question is why was this race not fleshed out in B5wars or ACTA. I saw tons of races that were barely mentioned become AOG cannon but these slipped throught the cracks.

So who is willing to flesh them out and create ships for them?

Likely because they weren't one of the major races or members of the league (which a lot of the "mentioned on the fly" races were) and thus there was never any supplement suitable to put them in.

Plus they were a somewhat badly handled plot device in from what is IMHO the worst of the B5 seasons (even if the episode they appear in is otherwise one of the better ones...). I mean random alien race manages to penetrate to B5 which is supposedly in neutral territory bang-slap in the middle of everyone else's territory (no one else other than the Gaim* seems all that bothered), suffer a bloody nose and withdraw never to be seen or even mentioned again...

*Who if their like their ACtA counterparts surely shouldn't have had much problem with them, unless they'd got their hands on the revised list early...

Just playing Devil's advocate here, but what with space being 3-D there home territory might be off the galactic plane, or mayb e they just plotted a course around the other territories.

Poor plot device is right. What the heck happened to the B5 universe after season 4. Its like it all fell apart, they would never introduce a race like that earlier on without background and context.

Season 5 was just so bad we ended up just pretending it didn't exist. Especially the ubiquitous and saccharin emo Lord Byron.

The first installment of LOTR's was ok but boy was it downhill after that. I remember having a right rant about the 3rd one until the extended edition came out, that just about saved it. Then I watched them all after reading the book again & all the way through I was just saying, "why."

I've not watched them since.

It looks good but the story is awful.

As for the random race, I thought that was a very poor plot line too that just didn't go anywhere.

I rate season 5 to be about as good as season 1. The only problem with 5 is that our expectations were massively raised by seasons 3 and 4, so it seems much worse in comparison!

I do think you missed the point of that episode. They weren't trying to introduce a new race. The background and context of the red-hats is completely irrelevant to the episode. The point is, to show a day in the life of a couple of normal guys on B5; not the ones who fly the Starfuries, not the ones who work in C&C, not the ones who defend the station against attacks. The guys who mop up afterwards. These guys, would never know anything about the aliens culture, their background or their ships. All they would know is, quick run to the shelters we're being attacked [yet again].

I said a similar thing about Crusade ie that it was on a parr with the first B5 series. You were being introduced to new characters and getting to know them etc etc. Although I'd have liked to see the captain of the Victory replaced much more than Sinclair who I quite liked.

I don't think the episode itself is a bad one but the lack of background of the aliens hurt it. How much better would it have been if the Drakh had launched a lightening raid? A race that actually played a major part in that series and thereafter.

The bit about it going over the mechanics' heads as they simply ran round doing their day to day job was well done.

As I said I thought it was one of the better episodes of the season, it was more the fact that such a major event was completely forgotten later on once they had returned to more conventional episodes that was poor (a bit like Thirdspace in fact... the movie itself was ok, not the best but ok, but was an event which was just crammed in between the two story arcs of season 4 without actually being present when the series was made).

Season 5 would have been better had it been in its original form, which included the later half of Season 4 (dealing with Clark), which they crammed in because they didn't think they'd get funding for another season.

Why does it always have to be about Race with you people? Stop playing the Race Card and let it go already!

I did like the fact that those maintenance guys were more than willing to arm themselves and defend their home against invasion when put into that situation. It was a brilliant episode. Just wish it could have happened a season or 2 earlier...
