Question about weapon for USMC

I was just wondering if anyone has mentioned the Metal Storm system for the americans? It is something that we have now, much less 10 years from now.

Ah Metal Storm, did you know the company is Australian based?

Go aussie!

On topic, Metal Storm technology is not currently deployed. I know they are working on the Advanced Individual Combat Weapon for the Australian Defence force as a service weapon for 2010 or 2011.

Yes they are working on systems for the US, but no I havent heard of any Metal Storm systems for Battlefield Evolution US forces.

I think they wany to go with something reliable... the Metal Storm's only really unique feature is a high rate of fire, and that's about it. So if you want to just waste ammo.....

Well, the US Army's developing a Tank mounted Railgun, and the Navy's going with Railguns for thier next line of ships...

But railguns as an Anti Missile system?

Yeah I read some talk about a railgun with magnetic mombo jumbo being able to fire at speeds fast enough it could track and fire at incoming missles.

Sounds cool in theroy.

That would be pretty awesome but the problem I can see is, and correct me if wrong here, but at the moment railgun technology, despite being extremely accurate, long ranged and so on still tends to be pretty bulky and slow to actually fire (in terms of rate of fire, charge time from pressing the 'big red fire button' and so on as opposed to projectile speed of course (that needless to say is insanely fast, sort of the whole point really :P)).

Now a system like that is great for blowing up tanks, buildings ships etc from miles away but trying to hit small fast moving object like a missile?

Cant see how this would be any more effective really than current Phalanx defence systems and so on.

Would be awsome if they could pull it off though. In my oppinion theres a simple fact here:

MORE RAIL GUNS = BETTER :D

i trust mechanical weapons over electrical weapons any day to do the job.

them is big batteries in dat der vehicla bob, Yup its fur dem rail shootin fingmajigys guns, woozyy bob cant they just shoot shells like ol mama, this is the army bob, nor USMC.. YUP..

wonder with all this climate change there go solar powered :D

A railgun on an armored vehicle is very impractical.

What ISN'T impractical is a railgun on a ship, where there's plenty of fuel and no worries about moving it over harsh terrain.

If anything, this will be replacing Tomahawk and similar systems for supporting land forces from the ocean.

Well technically gunpowder is easier to store than electricity right now.

Energy weapons technology will always be limited by battery technology.

Try firing the weapon without electricity....

Try firing normal guns without gunpowder....

Well, I can do it with compressed air....so...yeah....

Emerpor Norton II:

Actually a railgun on an armored vehicle is fairly practicle... they've been testing one at Aberdeen, MD for a few years now...

It's easier to store, but more hazardous. Tanks, for instance, require systems to prevent the ammunition from cooking off. Rounds that are launched with electricity don't face this type of danger. So as a result, ballistic weapons technology will always be limited by storage technology.

I don't think this really matters. Once an enemy round pierces the Armour it is time to bend over & grab your ankles - although what peverted tankies do in the confines of their tank is their own private business
