Question about the Traveller B5

Mongoose
How self contained rules-wise is the Traveller B5 going to be? By this I mean do I need anything other than the main book and the B5 one? I assume there will be a fair bit of difference in tech, ship, and psionic detail from the standard rules.

As a side note, I have always thought the Traveller rules were interesting but it took the B5 announcement to get me to bite the bullet and pick up the main rulebook. Traveller seems like the perfect match for a B5 style game. So I guess chalk up one anecdotal point for new settings pulling new players into Traveller. 8o)

You know BSG would be a awesome setting to add to the Traveller setting. It would be perfect like B5, Judge Dredd, and Star Ship Troopers. MWP has the current license but for only 3 products and two of them are already out with the 3rd planned. Now might be the time to jump on the BSG and SG1/SGA lines as well too!

Thanks for that cool anecdote. That's very encouraging!

I think it's important not to underestimate the differences between the Babylon 5 universe and the Traveller universe. Differences in background are key. And Mongoose has the expertise. While I'm hoping for compatability, at the same time I can see a different set of character classes, some new equipment, and of course different starship components.

Played a couple of games of the BSG franchise, and it seems to work pretty well. Rules are pretty secondary, after all.

I shall be interested to see how they set the chargen system up to allow Viper Pilots to be Gro-po special forces... (I'm looking at you, Kara Thrace :) )

Galactica has quite small amount of different ships, doesn't it? On the other hand, so does B5 when looking at individual races, and there's plenty of ships in ACTA...

You will need the core Traveller rules to make best use of Traveller: B5 (not the official title, just my working one). There will be background, but the focus will be on character generation differences, new professions tailored to the B5 universe, along with all tables necessary, plus the obvious cases of ships and psionics. But it won't be a self-contained game, ala the d20 version.

Well in my mind, that sounds like the best way to do it. Leverage off the core rules and lay out the differences. The 'new professions' concept is obvious: not only do you get to flavor chargen towards the Babylon 5 setting, but you can model careers that may not be the focus of core Traveller.

Psi Corps, for example, perhaps.

Essentially, it's an alternative setting book to Spinward Marches then? Like Lankhmar or Slaine for RuneQuest?

That's a useful way of looking at it. I think you're right.

Will there be conversion notes from B52e to B5MGT? With all those supplements I own, it would be a shame if I couldnt use them for the Traveller version of the rules.

There has been no mention of such material, which is just as well really given how well the promised B5 1E to 2E conversion material went (or not).

Is this going to be the only version of B5 published after its released? I know I remember reading about it somewhere, but I cant find it anywhere and I dont know where I read the information concerning the answer to my question.

I hope to see one. Yes I can do it myself, but sometimes time constraints wont let me.

Since the latest supplent for the OGL/D20 B5 is due for release the month after, I guess not.

If I had looked closer I would have seen that. I'm such an idiot. :-(

Well anyway something more related to the Traveller version of B5. Are you going to have the rules for First Ones in here as well as the traditional races of the B5 universe?

Not to mention there's the Lurker's Guide to the Gaim due to be released in Jan and it has the OGL logo on it instead of the Traveller logo on it. I'd say that d20 based B5 is going to be around for a while. If we're lucky, b5 products might be dual stated in the future.
