Poor mans planetkiller. Battle report (picture heavy)

Cosmic Mongoose
We found ourselves with three players last Sunday, so we decided to put our campaign on hold for a while, and have a three man game with this scenario.

After dicing to see who was playing , it turned out I was the attacker, with 3 pt raid worth of ships. (and a great big asteroid) And my two friends were defending, with 5pt raid worth of ships, that they spit down the middle into two fleets.

The Narn defender had 1 Ka'Toc, 1 G'Karith, and 1 Var'Nic. All carrying frazi fighters.

And the Human defender used 1 Avenger, full of T-bolts. 1 Sagittarius, kitted out with standard antiship missiles. And a Psi Corp mothership, full of black omega starfuries. (the human fleet isn't strictly legal, but what the heck)

Oviously the Narns were doing some sort of teep research on the planet below. With help from the Corp.

I was at a bit of a loss as to what to use for my attack fleet. I'd gone to the club expecting to play a campaign battle, so I'd only really taken my Abbai, and a few other odds and ends that happened to be in their carry case. I wasn't about to sully my Abbai fleet by having them take part in a battle of this nature. So after looking at the odds and ends, I decided to go for style over sense, and rolled out my zonn, and a xill.

As the only fighters I had on me were kothas, and the fact that there was an e-mine ship at the other end of the table, not to mention black omegas, t-bolts, and frazis, I decided that trying to play a fighter game would be a complete waste of time for me. After all, the fighters probably wouldn't be able to do much against the rock. Surely.

With the fleets ready on the table it was go time.

For the first couple of turns the allies raced down the table, and the Vree hung back, waiting for the allies to get within striking range. I didn"t want to lose my ships too early in the game, and leave the rock undefended. If they were going to stop me, it was going to cost them.

The Narns were the first to reach the Vree and they attacked without hesitation. However, I was aware of the threat those double damage beams posed the rock, so I was happy to let them come.

The Ka'Toc found itself within range of both Vree ships, and was destroyed in a hail of antimatter. Both saucers got away with only light damage at this point. The xill losing one attack dice being the worst that happened.

The Narns closed further, and the fighters began their attack on the rock. I concentrated on trying to kill the var'nic, (because of those beams) and gave it a mauling. But both my ships got a bit more damaged by the close Narn assult.

The Humans get within range, and begin their attacks. At this point disaster struck the Vree. The first shooting of the turn saw the %$#@ saggi opened upon the zonn, and scored a 6/4 crit. Bugger, bugger, bugger.

The next round saw some serious action. The xill CAFed the already damage Var'nic into oblivion. And the gunless zonn, sucessfully rammed the g'karith into next week. Without even getting crippled.

It was at this point, after the fighters had made a couple of attack runs, that I realised my error in thinking that they wouldn't be much use in attacking the rock. The amount of dice they were throwing at it was doing some serious damage. And my ships were not really in any position to do much about it.

The next turn had the xill race forward, and cripple the saggi. only to have the mothership chop it in half with an awesome beam hit. The zonn however went chasing after the avenger carrier, which had been lending its firepower to the attack on the rock.

However, the allies got initiative, and the avenger all power to engined it out of the zonn's reach.(they saw what happened to the g'karith) And the combined fire of the mothership and saggi took it down to one damage point remaining.

At the start of the next turn things were looking bleak for The Vree. The allies once again got initiative, and the lilly livered captain of the avenger once again all power to engined it out of reach.

There was only one possible thing to do. With one point of damage the Vree were never going to survive this round of shooting, so the zonn's crew said their prayers (telepathically, of course) and rammed the sagittarius. The resulting explosion destroying both ships.

Two turns latter the combined effort of the fighters, avenger, and mothership destroyed the asteroid, stopping the Vree's dastardly plan in its tracks. Four turns alway from exiting the table.

Dispite having lost, this was one of the most fun games I've played in a while. It had plenty of those awesome ACTA moments that makes this game so much fun.

I was suprised at how good the fighters were at asteroid killing, as it was their hard work that did most of the damage. It was perhaps my biggest mistake, not taking them seriously while selecting my fleet.

The zonn having its guns taken out was a turning point I think. With over half my firepower gone there wasn't too much more I could have done to fend off the allies. Although, I think ramming two enemy ships to death in one game is fairly impressive. It did more damage without its guns than it did with them.

I can't really fault the allies game, maybe I wouldn't have sent the Narns charging in like that, but hey, the allies stopped the rock. And thats what mattered.

Like I said, it was a fun game. Thanks to our Narn player for taking these pictures.

An enjoyable, well-illustrated report of what was apparently an enjoyable game.

This plus talk of ramming in another thread got me to look up the Battle of Lissa, in which there was a great deal of ramming and which led to new ships being fitted with rams until well into the 20th century. Which means that Xonn needs to have a big spike stuck onto whatever you regard as the front. :)

Don't tempt me, ....................just don't tempt me.

Only time you would need windscreen wipers on a spaceship
