Pocket Conan

Merely pointing out that whilst Howard was, as could be expected at the time, somewhat sexist (not his fault, product of the environment and all that) for every helpless maiden to be rescued in his books there was another in either a position of leadership, or an able fighter, or both.

And if Conan ended up resuing them, that hardly makes them weak - Conan ends up rescuing damn near everybody!

And bringing the topic back onto track...

Women in REH stories were largely trophies, spoils of war.

Yup. Belit and Valeria were famously passive and weak, existing only as victims.

**points to his qualifier "largely," which implies exceptions **

There are no absolutes.

And yes, Conan does rescue or beat down just about everyone, god love him. But, come on: for _every_ slave girl there's a Belit or Valeria? Even the Devi got tossed over his mighty thews just like all the rest, royalty or not. :)

That's our boy!

I plan on buying this. $50 was too much for me, but it's worth $21 to me. I'm looking forward to next month! :)

Is the book going to be identical to the hardback (minus the art)?

I just got through reading 'Vale of Lost Women'. Conan slays chief of local tribe for white woman. Scares her and she runs off. Conan follows, rescues her and...escorts her back to civilization! In another story a girl betrays him and to punish her he drops her into a cesspool. He made Zenobia his queen because she gave him a dagger when he was imprisoned...I think he had more reactions to women than 'throwing them over his shoulder'. He was actually chivalrous in a rough sort of way. I've always thought that if he had a weakness, it was women...

Publishing the Conan stories in the order of composition has shown that the 'submissive girl in every story' thing is not a pattern of the stories as a whole, but only of a half-dozen relatively lesser tales that were written late 1932–late 1933.

I was just at the FLGS this afternoon, getting last-minute presents for my bro-in-law. The Conan RPG was a possibility...until I saw the border.

I kept flipping through the book, thinking that the babes-in-chainmail-bikinis-or-less motif was just NOT something I remembered from reading RE Howard way-back-when. And then I saw more pandering to the purile. The woman wearing nearly nothing, on her hands and knees behind a man. What is it with the implied submissive position of women in so many illustrations in the main book? The illustrations where women are not in either an inferior or submissive pose show women with big weapons and armor that would be downright dangerous to the wearer. (Imagine having a metal edge digging into your sternum... there are safety reasons why this sort of breast-cupping "armor" stuff is illegal in groups that do mock combat.)

The main book just isn't something that I want to give to a guy with a 9-year-old daughter in the house. Does anyone have any hard data on how much "artwork" will be in the pocket book, or what's being left out of the main book to leave "all the essential rules you need to play the RPG"?

Note to anyone from Mongoose who might read this:

When you set up the art for a book, keep in mind the female roleplayers...we're rare, but most of us find art like this annoying at best. Also keep in mind the moms, aunts, sisters, girlfriends, etc of roleplayers, and that many of them may judge a book by its art: seeing something that offends them will lose sales. I will not buy ANY Conan book that has that blasted border. And there are a lot of Mongoose books I've left on the shelf because of the preponderance of female near-nudity.

I'm neural about the art, but as for the pocket guide, I love the idea. The binding on my first print run Conan book is collapsing, and to have a book that I can mangle to my hearts content, write notes in, get pizza grease on, throw across the room to my Gm, bend the cover back etc. well thats just swell.
Just my .02

I'll probably pick it up. I have the first edition and could use a cheap tie in to the AE.

This is my situation as well. The answers in the FAQ are too vague in some instances and/or unclear. As a novice initiate of d20, the search for the truth in the original edition can be nerve-racking. The Pocket Conan will be an excellent resource. My understanding is the Pocket Conan will be exactly like the AE edition (examples included) except w/o pictures?

i'm going to buy the pocket manual, it will be usefull to have some more space on my desk when i master the game session!

about the art: omg what a big deal... a couple of bad drawn tits!

hmmm. i am making my decision right now, does the pocke have all thep pictures removed? or just the borders?

If it's made like the Pocket Players Guide, then it has no pictures at all. It's all text. It's a great resource, however for several reasons.

1. If the pictures do bother you...well, no pictures

2. It's size is easy to transport - great if you go to conventions

3. It's price is nice so that you won't mind getting it used up, like those first edition dnd stuff we all had. Back then, they were used and abused. Now, I'm so anal about my stuff, it bugs me to have a page creased, much less beat to all get out like those first books. At 20 bucks, we can beat this one up.
