Three 'Hawk' series Romulan ships are previewed today on Planet Mongoose - grab yourself a sneak peek at all the plasma-goodness!

Love the Sparrowhawk, wasn't to sure about the more curvy hull, but it's sold me - awaiting the Pre-order option (something to do untill the Gorn turn up - real plasma user don't hide !  )

I'm surprised there isn't more interest in the new Hawk-series ships, to be honest.

(A couple of the other Hawks are shown here, too.)

I like the orginal TV ship, really don't like the skyhawk - and the Condor is a horrible looking ship - looks slightly better upside down. The Sparrowhawk is pretty cool.

Would any of you UK based guys be up for trading some Romulans from the squadron box (ie trading a Condor and SkyHawk for the older ships)?

I wish War Eagles were 2 a blister.

Have to agree with Ben2 that the War Eagle & King Eagle are definitely my favorite ships in the early style but it was the Hawk design(s) that finally convinced me, (well that and looking forward to painting eagles on some Klingon ships). My pre-dorder for a Romulan fleet will be going in mid next week when my card changes over.

Likewise.

I was thinking of some themed task forces and one would be a pure old school built around a king eagle and war eagles with a few smaller escorts. But then I am thinking of a timeline campaign with early, mid and then late ships as the campaign advances. The same with Feds, Klingons etc

Still that is just a tide over till the GORN arrive to crush all before them. Mwahahahahahacough.

If the play is analogous to SFB, the old style Romulans are tougher to be "good" with than the hawk series, especially in fleet battles. They are really optimized for the "chuck and duck" which allows, in fleet actions, a smart opponent to focus on part of your fleet while ignoring the rest. The Hawk series, on the other hand, has more tactical flexibility, able to do all three of the classic tactics: chuck and duck, plasma ballet, anchor (though of course, I'm not sure if the anchor will translate to ACTA:SF).

Hawk series also completely rock in campaign play due to their modular nature, allowing them to more cheaply deploy specialty ships (scouts, maulers, carriers, commando ships) where on the front they are needed ... and makes strategic tracking of these ships by the opponent all but impossible (as if the cloak didn't make it tough enough).

I am a big fan of the Hawk series, especially from a campaign perspective. Very efficient production, very adaptable.

I have never really liked the Condor miniature. I plan on lumping it in with my Eagle series ships. It just looks like an upgraded and enlarged War Eagle. I plan on scratchbuilding some modular dreadnaughts so I will be purchasing some extra miniatures just for that purpose. I really like the Demonhawk which is an entirely different hull and would be harder to scratchbuild. It carries 2 Sparrowhawk or Firehawk modules (with some limitations) and a Skyhawk module. The Omnihawk and Megahawk are, basically, enlarged heavy cruisers which carry 4 Sparrowhawk or Firehawk modules.

Don't get me wrong. I love the Vulture. What's not to like about 2 R torpedoes? Just, visually, The Condor looks like it belongs to the older series Romulan ships.

Hello,

I just found out about this launch and it sounds very exciting. I love the federation ships, but I'm wondering about the Romulans.

Everything looks Original ST, will we be seeing ST:TNG ships? I preferred that era's Romulan designs.

Thank for any info, good luck to Mongoose!

In Federation Commander, the modularity of the Hawk-series ships is somewhat abstracted out; a given configuration would be shown as a separate Ship Card, rather than incorporated into the same SSD. (For example, the SparrowHawk Aegis escort has its own Ship Card, in Booster #92.)

I would suspect that a similar kind of thing would be the case here; with any alternate configs presented as separate stat entries later on.

One thing I hope is somwhat refined compared to Federation Commander is the balance factor for the plasma-chuckers. Since there are no acceleration limits in FC (as opposed to SFB), it's seen by many of the regulars on the FC forum to be too easy for target ships to outrun incoming plasma salvoes; making the Gorns and Romulans less competitive. (The ISC at least have the PPD, which itself was adapted into a somewhat differently-operating weapon than it is over in SFB.)

It would be unfortunate if big plasma didn't translate well into ACtA:SF.

The nature of the licence under which the Star Fleet Universe operates means that the timeline stops well before the TNG/DS9/VOY era; and while the SFU has its own early technology material, none of it draws from what you see in Star Trek: Enterprise. (So Earth ships, like the Fed old CL; but no NX-01.)

This setting parted company from the CBS/Paramount Franchise a long time ago, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a lot to offer in its own right.

Currently the license ADB has only covers the original TOS Designs, so Movie, TGN/DS9/VOY & ENT era designs aren't possible.

I wonder if they are going to work a second firing mode into the plasma ships. Since the photons and disruptors can be overloaded could the plasmas be bolted as they can be in SFB/FC?
