Pavis Rises questions

I have Pavis Rises at last. I'm slowly reading it, and am reserving judgement. It does, however, make you want to read it (which is promising) and, Pavis really is Glorantha!

A few queries and errata:

1) Page 25, the Arrowsmith Citadel - I cannot reconcile the description of the citadel with the maps. It states the the main entrance is in the NE wall. But looking at the city map (inside front cover), it appears NW?

The same issue arises with the introduction to Riverside district (pg 25) that describes the Great Market as directly opposite the citadel on the east. The map on the front cover orientates the Gt market to the SW?

Can someone explain which direction north is meant to be on the pavis city map (or whether the text is wrong)?

2) Page 126 and 143, Fierce Praxian Nomad, is missing the percentile value for their combat style.

3) Page 152, Beard Goblins are missing a percentile value for their combat style too.

Thanks for any help on this,

Antalon.

It should read NW. Tis a typo.

Here the text is correct but the compass rose on the map is wrong. Due north is the direction of the river, which places the Great Market to the west of the citadel.

80%

3) Page 152, Beard Goblins are missing a percentile value for their combat style too.

55%

What? No, the river has always flowed to the southeast in Pavis. I can understand a few minor changes, but rotating the entire city by 45° is going a bit far. This can also be seen on the free Prax map on the Mongoose web site: http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/pdf/rqpraxmap.jpg

Thanks Loz,

the description of where the gt market is still appears wrong: if it is in the west (or on the west bank), then I think the main compass orientation is fine.

If it is meant to be on the east side, then the whole map needs turning around or the market moved so it seats in the shadow of arrowsmith citadel but on the correct side of the river.

Personally, if the text was changes to read 'west', that would largely clarify the matter.

I have bought and read the book, and it is all right. I only have minor quibbles, based on my reading of the previous books about Pavis (River of Cradles and Pavis & Big Rubble):

- Where is Mani's Fort?
- Where is the Great Basher?
- Where is the Pavis Old Mint?

Now I have some doubts regarding the best kept secrets in Pavis (WARNING: BIG SPOILERS):

- If the EWF banner reinforces the safety of Pavis from enemies, why don't they use it against Jaldon? Why did Pavis fall (according to canon) if they had the banner? Any opinions/suggestions?
- Why did Pavis hid the cradle in the canal and did not place it further downriver from the start? How is the cradle expected to go past Feroda, a God Learner outpost?

With a bunch of adventurers on board to protect it? Or, with a bunch of Jrusteli adventurers aboard to make sure it doesn't make it past Feroda.

There's something odd about Feroda. It's supposed to be a miserable, half-forgotten outpost, yet it's at the mouth of the Zola Fel so it should be one of the busiest and most prosperous ports in the world.

It is on the main route to pavis, but then Pavis is the only place worth goign to on the Zola Fel. I'd expect Feroda to be doing OK, but I'm not sure being inbetween Pavis and the ocean would be enough to make it world class.

It's also a stopover on the way to/from Kralorela, and the Middle Sea Empire is very active over there. Maybe it's too close to Esrolia to benefit from that route.

I think the problem it has is that there is no local infrastructure to support it, so any supplies it provides to passing ships actualy have to be imported as well. It doesn't have a local population and agriculture base. Hence any profit margins will be pretty low.

Okay, I found this earlier thread that explains some of the other questions I had (like where is God's Hill).

But - can wanyone help with these questions:

1) Which is the west bank and which is the east bank of the river? The map indicates that the side with the Quarry and Dragon Mount is the east bank. The text, in places, suggests otherwise? The map appears to be orientated correctly, so I'm not sure how the text is so confused.

2) Where is the entrance to the Troll's stronghold: the text states west of the river and south of God's Hill. But, to be frank, I'm completely confused over which way is north, south or anything else now.

What is it about Mongoose and maps

The river flows from northwest to southeast, and is generally a north-to-south river, so the "west bank" of the river is on the south-west as it flows through Pavis. The free map on the Mongoose web site should make this clear by looking at the wider geographical context in which the city sits.

Thanks Phil - so the Quarry and Dragon Mount are on the east bank (NE of the river)?
Yes, the map is largely correct, I think all the errors are in the text, apart the mis-labelling of Gods Hill.

OK, but what I mean is: why wasn't this part of the original plan?

- Where is Mani's Fort?
Mani's Fort is a post-Jaldon feature.

- Where is the Great Basher?
Its still at the tip of Cradlesnatch Island, facing upstream

- Where is the Pavis Old Mint?
An oversight, this one. You can certainly locate it in Real City, or rule that it is a post-Jaldon relic.

It reinforces the safety but doesn't guarantee it. The real safety is the imperviousness of the walls, which is linked to the Man Rune suffusing the city. Plus, the banner isn't common knowledge and is, furthermore, an EWF artifact of considerable power. The whole point of it being where it is, is to protect it from the EWF's enemies. Unleashing it to defend Pavis against the barbarians would signal to all and sundry its location and pre-empt its preordained use. It really is too important to go waving around.

Plus, Lorenkarten has no absolute loyalty to Pavis. He has an EWF-centric agenda meaning he'll put the empire's interests first; not the city's.

- Why did Pavis hid the cradle in the canal and did not place it further downriver from the start? How is the cradle expected to go past Feroda, a God Learner outpost?

Jaldon and the Sun Dome Templars, and the GLs at Feroda. Both would take the opportunity to capture the cradle once it is outside Pavis's protection. As long as its within the walls its safe. It also allows time for Pavis and others to assemble protectors to help sail it past Feroda.
