Organized play / Campaigns

Will there be an organized play series scheduled?

Pretty much everything (miniature related) currently being played successfully (successful defined as popular and selling) in my region has some sort of organized play with events and tournaments. Even not so good games seem to be active if there is incentive to compete. It has to do with most people not having time to sit down and work out all the campaign details needed for a campaign and then getting bogged down in running the details but not being able to play. With organized play they know they can just drop in on Monday night with a fleet/army of X value and play. And they know that the conditions of the campaign will be balanced and fair because they are from a central source. Attend X events for X points and they are ranked X. Repeat next time. Games that just have some rules in the back of the book tend to fade into the bargain bin.

The question I have been getting most from the local miniature gamers when I bring up ACTA:SF have been variations on the theme of "Who will be running the official organized play", "what kind of tournaments", "how is ranking determined", etc. When I answer that I don't know and there hasn't been any indication of anything planned I get the, "well let me know if it will be a real game"? This idea of needed organized play to be "real" is even overtaking RPG's over here.

As a second question, I saw the campaign sheet and it looks like there is a campaign system for the game. Can anyone give any basic details of how it will work?

We'll be starting with a series of tournaments in the UK, US and Australia (and if someone wants to start setting them up elsewhere, please get in touch!), before looking at combining them into something larger.

As for the campaign, it uses a system of scenarios and random points values, with large starting fleets and ships accruing experience/refits. There is no map and people are not required to turn up to every session (though they can). Basically, it is designed for club play.

Pretty much as the previous A Call To Arms campaign systems, then?
(sans 'jump gate' location, obviously)

No - complete change (and one we are looking to develop in future games).

The basic campaign system in ACTA:NA looks quite serviceable for the SFU, at least if its two players (or teams of players). "The year is 2585. Fleets of all the belligerents have been ground down by more than a decade of continuous combat. As the General War grinds towards an inevitable cease-fire, you are given the mission of securing strategic objectives for use as bargaining chips in the negotiations..." Alternatively, set it ten years earlier and each side is struggling to gain control of areas necessary to launch a strategic offensive on the other.

YES!

You have made me a happy old fart ;)

Especially having a campaign system designed for club play (they don't have to make every single session).

I already have arraigned space/days at my FLGS to try and get the game going locally. Having an "official" organized play will really help that along.

I can't wait to see the details, both in the rule book and the additional information you come up with.

Now I just need my pre-order to reach the FLGS.....
