Mongoose
Greetings,

Some of my local players are asking me about Spacequest or RQ SciFi rule sets in general.

My question is thus:

What are the current usable and or published choices for this ruleset?

Translight by comstargames is not done.
Dancing Drayad <sp> games is/was working on something but its not out.
BRP Deluxe is rumored to have some scifi stuff in it, but i dont think its out yet.
That leaves Cthulhu Rising which is more of a collection and requires 3 different books for the basic rule set.

You have pretty much summed up the situation. There is not much out at the moment, but both SpaceQuest and BRP will be out before too long. (now where is that crossed finger emoticon?)

For whatever reason there has never been much sci-fi BRP out there. Ringworld was excellent but is pretty much impossible to find. The age old Worlds of Wonder had a sci-fi booklet as well. Both of these are way out of print though.

[Conspiracy]Mongoose cleverly derailed NovaQuest by making Matt Thompson editor of S&P Wargamer (that'll teach him!).[/Conspiracy]

Anyone who can use Google should be able to turn up a PDF of the Worlds of Wonder material. Of course, these are copyright-infringed, so you shouldn't do it, so don't - NO - STOP TYPING!

Other Suns, although not strictly BRP was another good D100 sourcebook.

We're going to get a space/scifi version of RQ soon enough, I think, which can only be a good thing.

Well from this,

Hi guys,

Just a few notes on what we are up to at the moment.

The very earliest stages of development have begun on SpaceQuest, the science fiction (and likely 'modern') rules for RuneQuest. Serious work will start a little later this year.
<snip>
post made in February, it would appear to me that the MGRQ:SQ material is still a year out.

OK,
I have to admit I started work on R.U.N.E:Space, but put it on hold waiting for SpaceQuest as a core engine.

If there's enough interest I guess that it could be bumped up a bit but I think we're all waiting on the SF engine so as to not have the rug pulled out from under our feet.

I take it you have seen all the Cthulhu Rising material at http://www.ragingtrifle.com/cthulhu_rising/index.php

With that and the basic CoC rulebook (or just about any other version of BRP) there's really more than enough material to run a campaign. The monograph adds more but I reckon it's not essential.

Cheers

Thanks Dave,

I have not looked at CoC. Is it 'modern' RQ/BRP with the mythos flavor?

CoC is a simpler version of RQ using HP without hit location, introducing an Education attribute, Sanity (for the horror genre) and a modern skill set.

It is faster to play but less detailed than RQ, but so compatible that you can plug in/rip out almost any facet of BRP based rules with little difficulty. Weapon/armour scales are almost all compatible, and I've used BRP stuff indiscriminately across genres in the past without even really converting anything. Just roll the %s. Certainly MRQ could be used to power Cthulhu Rising with little difficulty.

The default setting for CoC is the 1920s but the basic rules also contain info on the 1890s and the modern era (essentially 1990s) while there is also the Delta Green books - a stunning separate campaign set in the late 90s/early XXIc. There are also published settings for the Roman era, Dark Ages, 16th/17th century and the future (...Rising) plus innumerable extras available on the web.

You have to play CoC at least once before you die! - it is considered by many to be the best BRP game, and by some the best rpg, period.

Cheers

Dave
