Opinions on custom ship building

I would say yes. It only becomes easier and cheaper to program it :P

or, it could be harder to find software to run on the hardware...kinda hard to get software for the old IBM 360s unless you know where to look! :)

AH, but it easier to get for free, with limited knowledge of computers...

Never mind the antique comptuer hardware and software, where are you going to find anyone to hire as crew who knows how to run it?

"Keyboard?! How quaint."

;)

^ Lol, well this leads to my next question;

After totalling tonnage and cost, the thing looks good, might even be able to boost some armour on the thing.

However I have come to a bit in the Core that I feel needs clarifying.

The book says its 1k to carry a ton of freight, plus 200 creds for each addition parsec.
My ship is a J2 ship, so I figured thats 1,200 creds per ton of freight. However, a friend of mine says the 200 cred bonus goes on the top and is not per ton. For example by my friends ruling, 2 tons would equal 2,200 creds at J2, not 2,400.
This is important as when totalling profits and how much left is needed for berthing costs, I need a straight number.

My cargo hold is at 35 dtons, so if it was full with freight, would the profit in two trips be 70,200 creds (35k x2 +200 like my mate says) or 84,000 creds (1,200 per ton - 42000 x2)???

Your friend is incorrect. It is per ton.

You've got it right.

Code:
Jump Cr/T
  1 1000
  2 1200
  3 1400
  4 1600
  5 1800
  6 2000

Just to clarify a bit, though I'm sure you've got this right too, it's not based on the ship's jump rating but on how far you haul the freight.

Your ship is J2 and if you haul freight 2 parsecs you get Cr1200 per ton. But if you instead make a 1 parsec trip with the same J2 ship you only get Cr1000 per ton for freight that trip.

Same prices as low passage.

Cool, I can definetely afford a tiny bit of armour to go on this ship and not destroy the profits! :)

Depending I might also boost the computer and software, possibly also redo the turret - I have a scrapyard salvaged Triple Turret, it currently holds a TL10 Particle Beam, a TL 11 Beam Laser and a TL 9 sand caster. The story behind the part being it already had the sand caster and the two new weapons now added were ordered parts to replace the original gubbins :)

Hmm, might be a problem there. If your Power plant rating is 1 or 2, a maximum of 25% of the weapons can be Particle Beams. Don't know if there is errata for a 100 ton ship allowing any unless the PP rating is 3-4.

I could be way off though. Others here may have a different take on that rule.

I thought that only applied for Small craft going off how the Core is presented. Btw, yes its a PP that fuels M2 and J2 Drives.

Also, looking at the small craft creation rules in High Guard, it mentions a point on limiting particle beams, but doesnt mention much else.

Page numbers and quotes from MGT Core or High Guard are much appreciated but a side of me also says "hey, its one beam, not like I got bays or anything!"

A particle beam has to be in a triple turret, but can only be one in it. Doesn't specifically say you can't have a particle beam and something else sharing a triple turret, but doesn't say you can either...

Power plant and weapons for non capital ships is covered in High Guard on page 48. High Guard page 61 for small craft.
