Once your commissioned do you "Advance" normally?

I mean that once you succeed at your commission roll, you never have to roll for commission again right?

So, you make a normal advancement roll and then ascend the Commissioned Officer track once you are commissioned?

thanks

Yep.

Once commissioned, your continue to roll for advancement and move up the Officer ranks.

Remember though that for the purposes of Mustering Out benefits, you ADD your enlisted and officer ranks to get an "effective" rank.

For example:

A character is Rank 3 enlisted when he makes his commission roll. He then proceeds to Officer Rank 3 before mustering out.

His effective Rank is 6 for determining number of rolls.

Yes, but, not within the same term, you can be commissioned or advance not both within the same term, unless it is via an event.

In Mercenary if an Army or Marine officer leaves there respectify services & becomes a merc do they start over at rank 0 or do they keep their current rank? I was working on an Imperial Army officer. He mustered out as a Captain;would he still be a Captain or does he now become a trooper?

Short answer is no, IMO. It's a seperate career you start at the ground floor. Also the likelihood is your character want's those rank skills.

I have seen it done both ways. Also, in the Real World, if an Army-Puke leaves the Army and later joins the Navy, they are usually allowed to keep most (or all) of their previous rank. This is especially true for Officer types. They may drop a rank or two, but they would still be officers.

I would think that Mercenaries would have a similar respect for former military rank.

It also depends on the situation and how close the two careers are to each other.

Navy to Merchant is OK, the person keeps full rank (per TMB), so there is a precident for allowing it.

How about - just thinking off the top of my head - the following two or three scenarios, all involving ground pounders:-

1. A Sergeant leaves his Regular Army - O after so many good terms, good standing with his unit and the force, and joins a merc unit. What'd be his rank in the merc unit?

2. A Marine Gunnery Sergeant joins the same merc unit. Same question.

3. And again, only it's with an Officer - a Major.

I really doubt they'd want to start again as an E1 or an O1, respectively. Because in many cases with servicemen there's money, but there's also pride. And while money's probably the biggest incentive - I mean, why else would they want to go freelance unless they'd really dropped the ball and got the General's daughter pregnant or something unless they were going to be offered more money than they've ever seen - nevertheless, there's the reassuring weight of those stripes, that brocade, that's hard to shake off.

This also depends on the type of Mercenary Unit the person is going into.

I would start each of these characters at 1-2 ranks below their military rank. The Major might be only a Lieutenant, but he would still be an officer.

The Sergeant would probably be a Corporal and the Gunny would be a Sergeant.

IF however, the Merc unit was basically identical to what the character did his last term, then I might let him have his full rank. I would make the Player roleplay the job interview. The better he did, the higher rank I would allow.
