Old Rules Question: Battle Mage vs Master Crafter

I have a few questions.

I recently built a Master Crafter (Encyclopedia Arcane: Magic Item Creation) with the full understanding that the former wizard would no longer be able to cast spells in the normal sense. I have had the opportunity to level this character up to the point where I can no longer add Master Crafter levels.

I was searching through other wizard prestige classes hoping to increase my caster level but not be bogged down with otherwise non-beneficial wizard levels (one bonus feat every 5 levels? come on).

Finding the Battle Mage (Encyclopedia Arcane: Battle Magic) prestige class, and finding that they also do not cast spells in the traditional sense EITHER but rather use the Mortis Harness (A wondrous item) to focus their energy to cast their bad-ass spells, I find myself wondering if these two are compatible despite the Creation Focus class feature.

If I, as a Master Crafter, craft my own Mortis Harness and am instructed in its use, would I be able to use battle magic spells at that point since I am using an item to cast them? If not, is it still possible for me to craft one of these harnesses and benefit from the wand-sockets?

I realize this may be game-breaking, but I really would like a straight answer on this please. I am just looking for my character's power level. after Master Crafter levels, going back to wizard seems very weak and my only other prestige class option, the eldritch knight, also seems a tad underpowered.

Thank you for any answers.
