Official Mongoose position regarding Conan & D&D 4E

I'm not an expert on gaming license issues, but intuitively I'd say it's probably just impossible to repeal the OGL. Of course they can abandon the whole SRD/OGL thing with 4E, i.e. declare any new stuff they publish does not fall under it, but they cannot say that 3/3.5 SRDs are not OGL anymore.

Either way, it shouldn't bother Conan in any way. The Conan OGL system is fine the way it is. It does its job.
D20 is by far not the only system that can make a Conan game work, either. Had Mongoose decided to make Conan run on MRQ (Mongoose RuneQuest), that would most probably work, too. But using D20 of course does make it easier to switch from other D20 games, and you can use a lot of 3rd-party material with no or very little conversion effort.

I think that Conan will remain 3.5 and not go 4E if the customers (us!) keep interest in the current set of rules.
I'm very happy about the number of delays of Conan 2ndE, this means that plenty of people asked for it.
Nevertheless, those people did not know about the coming of 4E, they majority of them pre-ordered COnan 2E long before the official news about D&D 4E.
I'm curious about the number of people who will ask for subsequent Conan2E books (e.g. return to the road etc...) .
In any case I'm quite optimistic, plenty of people will keep on playing Conan RPG, even with this set of rules.
Tons of people are interested in Conan: it is the best adaptation of D20 thus far and the works of Howard are (together with Tolkien and maybe Moorcock) the basis of anything we call today Fantasy (even of D&D itself).
On the other hand, if the "Thieves" of the Coast will force (through some mojo laws) the Mongoose's guys to abandon 3.5, I really hope that Mongooose will not turn Conan in a runequest variant (as they did with Slaine).

Yes I did.
But it speaks only about now.
I think it has not value in the long-run (1-2 years).
If we want them to keep of using the 3.5 version we must buy the forthcoming Conan books.

Or may be Mongoose will just wait for the release of the next to come 4.5E so they can work on with proper rules.

Or maybe they don't plan on changing to 4E+. The game is Conan the RPG, not DeenDee. The two are completely different in scope, background, presentation etc etc.

For my part, I'm wondering whether or not Mongoose will eventually do a Starship Troopers/Conan crossover game? Conan battling Bugs with his trusty combat rifle, splitting the skull of a Brain Bug with a handy Mobile Infantry bayonet, delving deep underground and finding, in a subteranean lair, that the devious Queen of the Demon Web Pits is the real mover and shaker of this interstellar conflict. Now there's some baseless speculation for you.

Makes as much sense. Sheesh.

Well, there are levels, classes, skills ans skill points, feats, and the same D20 systems. I recognize it is different but not that different.
Anyway it is not important. 4E is due in May 2008 and 4.5E probably 6-12 month later.
So it leaves us with some (hopefully) great books for Conan in the meanwhile.

Hu? Did you smoke something special?

BTW welcome back to the forums Mournstorm.

It is surprising how many older members of the Conan forum come back there with the new edition. :D

Luckily I don't play "classic" deendee/D20, so I don't have to worry about the rules minutae (feats, skills etc etc ad nauseum) anyway. :D

I may not post here often, but I do keep track of things via lurking. Sometimes it becomes necessary to say something if only to point out "The sky is NOT falling!"

Its good to see a company actually listen to people's ideas, complaints and suggestions to make a game better; I also think Mongoose has a history of this sort of thing. I've been a Howard fan all my life and a Conan fan all my life. My feeling is that Mongoose has a winner with the Conan RPG, one that will last quite a long time indeed and one that only needs fan ideas, inspiration and input to continue treading the jeweled thrones of lesser companies games beneath its sandaled feet. 8)

I've found this poll on Enworld:
http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=206447

As you can see, the more Conan-like features (less magic item, no more of the "not that good" magic system") are the prefered ones (at the time of writting).

My guess: Mongoose will publish a 4E compatible version of Conan next year.

Though Matt already a new edition wasn't planned for (it wouldn't make any sense), let us wait what Matt will say about 4E in his yearly thoughts. I suppose we will know a bit more by then.

Even if there is a desire to use some 4e stuff in Conan, there's nothing wrong with waiting a couple of years from now to do it, since 4e won't be out for nearly a year anyway, and then the bugs will need to be worked out as well.
