Officer Commisions ...

Okay, I've got something that I don't understand.

Any character going through the Army, Marines or Navy careers has the option to apply for a Commission.

Is the Commission roll instead of the Advancement roll or in addition to it???

Can someone supply a worked example for me please???

It is instead of the Advancement roll, if you choose to take it. You don't have to, but you get the opportunity to take it instead of normal advancement each term. If you have been commissioned, you don't roll for it again, but roll advancement as normal, but along the Commissioned path.

Okay ... so if you fail your Commission roll, does that kick you out of the service like the failed Advancement roll??

The reason I ask is that the book states that the Commission roll is optional but that the Advancement roll is mandatory. This seems to imply that if you don't gain your commission, you can still roll for Advancement as a Enlisted person.

In this case, the text of the book is inconsistent with the character generation flowchart. I suggest you pick whichever alternative you prefer.

What flowchart??? There is no flowchart in the book. Unless you're referring to the Character Generation Checklist??

Err, I need to check this, but are you sure of that? A failed advancement roll kicks you out of service?

My bad ... if the roll is equal to or less than the number of terms, you have to leave the service.

Sorry.

Yes, that's what I meant. Sorry for any confusion.

Okay ... having looked at the Character Generation Check-list on p. 5 more closely, I can see where I was making the mistake.

BTW, has anyone noticed this little slip-up?? (Emphasis is mine).

5. Choose a specialisation for this career.
[...]
8. a. Roll for Advancement
b. If you succeed, choose one of the skills and training
tables for this career and roll on it. Increase your Rank
and take any bonus skills from the Ranks table for this
career. Go to step 9 if you wish to leave the career, or
step 5 to continue with this career.

c. If you roll less than the number of terms spent in this
career, you must leave this career.
d. Military characters (Army, Navy, Marines) can roll for
commission instead of rolling for advancement.
9. Increase your age by 4 years. If your character is 34 or older,
roll for Aging.

If you read it literally, it appears that you don't age until you actually decide to leave the career. This is contradicted by the actual text on p. 36.

I let Commision be an ADDITIONAL. You can roll for Advancement and Commission in the same term. Advancement roll comes first.

As a former military person, it shouldn't be an either/or roll. Advancement as an enlisted person is not tied to applying for a commission.
