Odd fluff question

Why did the EA change from having a paint scheme of white and blue to matte black? Was there a practical reason, or was it for some weird storyline reason?

Could be the Shadow tech integrated into the newer (2260+) hulls. I'd imagine it doesn't take paint very well. ;)

Well they changed to darker colour even before then really. Look at Omegas and Novas compared to Hyperions.

Really though I think it was just an artistic thing really that EA get's darker as the show progresses (on the off chance that anyone reading this DOESNT know the show yet I'll say no more to avoid spoilers)

The Minbari blew up the Orbital Painting Station.

You jest, but thats actually quite plausible now I think about it :P

EA rushed to rebuild it's fleet and didnt bother wasting resources on paint (it takes ALOT of paint to cover an Omega :P)

In one of the older Star Trek Tactical Combat Simulator (yep, that's what it was called!) supplements they mentioned how the Federation stopped using white paint and went with the plain white steel hull material due to cost and weight.
The article was excellent (a bit tongue in cheek) and explained how much 1000's of gallons of paint cost, how expensive it was for the equipment and man hours to paint it on and how heavy all this paint was. It followed through by going through the maintenance schedule costs for maintaining the paint (which got burnt / chipped / holed / flaked regularly) and how much space the paint physically took up to store onboard a ship, not to mention that whole fleet tenders could go out loaded with nothing but paint - a fairly useless cargo all things considered and another horrificly expensive run for cosmetics.
The EA probably came to the same conclusions and decided that there was no point in all of the expense and hassle just to paint a ship...

This is precisely the reason NASA stopped painting the shuttle's extrenal tank white.

I thought they stopped because theres no point in painting something when they're just gonna have to build another

I remember a note from the manual to the old PC game "VGA Planets" about the group called the "Solar Federation" (knock-off of Star Trek's Federation)

"For some unknown reason they like to paint their warships bright white and put external lighting systems on them. This tends to make them easier targets in a fight, but it also has the effect of scaring the daylights out of enemies. After all anyone who would light up their ships so brightly has to be unafraid of all enemies and have a very powerful ship or they are just completely stupid. "

Valid point!
