Hi,

While waiting on Babylon 5's second edition. The lure of VAS is getting to great to restrain myself...
I was looking at the historical background of the US Pacific fleet and stared looking up the "Nicknames" of ships.

Momentairaly I started with 5 carriers and 4 Battleships to form the core of my US Pacific fleet and found all "Nicks" but one, does annyone knows the nickname of the USS WISCONSIN ? (BB 64 Iowa-class)

USS LEXINGTON "THE BLUE GHOST" CV-2
USS SARATOGA "STRIPE-STACKED SARA" CV-3
USS YORKTOWN "THE FIGHTING LADY" CV-5
USS HORNET "THE GREY GHOST" CV-8
USS ENTERPRISE "THE BIG-E" CV-6

USS NEW JERSEY "THE BLACK DRAGON" BB-62
USS MISSOURI "MIGHTY MO" BB-63 (love this nick :D )
USS IOWA "THE BIG STICK" BB-61
USS WISCONSIN "?" BB-64

So if annyone knows the "Nick" of the Wisconsin... Plz post it here.
And of course feel free to post more ships and their "Nicknames here"

USS Salt Lake City - "Swayback Maru". Unofficial honour of being involved in the most engagements of any US ship in the war.

This site calls it "Whiskey Punch" and also offers A new nickname for Korea action of "Devil bomb hurler"

If they called them cool names anyway they wouldnt have to give em nick names

Warspite, Revenge, Ramilles now they are names :D

Yeah, the Royal Navy has the best names. HMS Splendid, HMS Courageous, HMS Furious...

I'll agree the RN does have the best ship names. But the American penchant for wry understatement is pretty funny.

A 15,000 pound bomb that has to be dropped from a cargo plane and is intended to insta-clear landing zones . . . a "daisy cutter." LOL!!

But some things just get too big for understatement. . . the 21,000 pound MOAB. . . "Mother of all bombs."

Isn't the MOAB a petrol/gas bomb? the bigest non-nuclear explosive device? ( used in the movie "Outbreak" to kill all infected )

It's a fuel/air bomb, yeah. Weapon of mass destruction. The US loves those things so very much...

Ask not the ways of the Admiralty Naming Committee - to try and understand them is the start of the road to madness :)
