Mongoose
hi guys i've just bought the boxed game and id like to get some additional units for each side

i would just like to know what i could field alongside the forces you get in the game apart from the card templates.

can i arrange the MI as such.. 3x 5 man MI-A4 squads and one NCO or Lieutenant [total 16 men]

and i assume the warrior bugs can make up 4x 5 bug squads [total 20 bugs]

but when i add up those pts the Mi come to roughly 800pts and the Bugs at 300...

what can i take to bulk out the bugs against the MI and can i have a CHAs or M8 alongside that MI platoon??

cheers for your help can't wait to get my hands on those minis

A tanker or two and a couple of boxes of Hoppers and ripplers will bulk your army right up. That said you will need a fair few more Warriors. You can get a box of 18 for not that much presently

A good option to look at would be http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/home/detail.php?qsID=1367&qsSeries=26 , which would give you roughly 2,000 points under 1st ed rules, and a good core army for SST:Evo

cheers man think i'll have to get a tanker and that mega swarm, probably a m8 too

out of interest would this set me up decently for SST RPG thanks

remember if you get the mega swarm that it contains a tanker. If you're willing to shell out for the Arachnid army book you can get rules for the King and Thorny Tankers, to give you some variation.

"look no further than the Warrior Bug Mega-Swarm box set! Containing 18 warrior bugs" - mega swarm details

don't you mean the invasion force??

cheers

just looking at that bug invasion force

and im from the UK so i'm looking at the £ currency
and it says that the invasion force is £80.00

but with the currant drop in prices the actually amount for buying the models individualy is £71.25

Tanker bug = £15
Ripplers = £22.50
Warrior Mega swarm = £22.50
Blister/Blaster bugs = £11.25

have i missed something important here? as i keep looking over it again and again

and i always come up with this missing £8.75

can i really get it all cheaper separatly this seems wrong to me

Is this an extra shipping price incured for one big box or something???

...soz if i have blown a whistle no one wanted mongoose to hear lol!

What I did was get another starter box of SST, that gave me 40 Warriors and 32 MI. Then I went hog wild, bought Grizzly and Cougar suits to have a standing army on its own right. Then I bought an ape suit. and 2 CHAS. Oh, and a box of LAMI (Light Armor Mobile Infantry).

I THEN bought the MI book LOL. I still want to get 2 chickenhawks, as well as another ape.

On the Arachnid side, I was getting 2 tankers, until I noticed that I'd need at least 2000 points to field 2 of them (Priority level 2). So, I am in the market for 1 tanker and a box of FireFries, then place another order for a Plasma Bug and another box of FireFries. Am looking at a ripper swarm to round out my bugs army.

no worries man,

would 3 x 5 man squads count as one or two platoons

and when [what points level] can you take an m8??

ta

can't speak for Evo cos I've no idea what it's going to be like in terms of platoon choices, but in 1st edition you have to have at least an NCO and two squads of 5 men in a power armour platoon), you then have to add another NCO or a lieutenant in order to add 1 or 2 more squads. You can have 1 Lieutenant and 2 NCOs in a platoon.

You can add an M8 pretty easily - any Officer can be upgraded to ride one, or you can upgrade a trooper in a squad to bein one.

in that case...

PLATOON 1
2 x 5 man MI Power Armour squads

led by 1 NCO

PLATOON 2

with a commanding lieutenant in a Ape suit

who is leading a single 5 man MI Power Armour squad

and this would count as two platoons ? (as the 2nd platoon does not have a compulsory two unit requirement?)

which would also count as priority level 2 force and can take atomics??

cheers for help

you'd have to arrange that as one platoon - LT, NCO, and 3 squads. The priority level for MI is a choice independent of point value - you can choose any PL you want - though it's often better to choose a lower one. If you take SICON Military intelligence training for your LT you can take a nuke in a PL1 army.

Hi mallymoocow -

If you haven't already, I suggest you scan through the Signs & Portents part of the Mongoose website and find the SST Army Updates article on page 56 of one of the recent S&P wargames issue. On page 59, it notes that power suit squads can be upsized to 8 now, with up to three extra troopers at +25 points each. This would allow a corporal for one four-man fire team and the sergeant for the other. In the book, the platoon had six 8-man squads commanded by a corporal with a lance corporal as a backup. In the game, page 62 of the main rule book shows a platoon to consist of four squads, one or two NCOs and one LT, and a squad to consist of eight cap troopers, including a Sergeant and a Corporal. All this is further explained on pages 64 and 65. On page 72 of the basic V1 rules it states that the M.I. player "..cannot use more than one platoon per 1,000 points value being chosen...", so up to four squads of 8 would be a good choice, with an NCO as a section leader for two squads and the LT as a rover.

Hi mallymoocow

SST:EVO looks to have warriors in units of ten instead of five, but the points are the same.

A couple of months ago I compared the Invasion Force components with the model prices if bought separately and found that there is indeed a discount (did my comparison in USD).

I think you should be gearing up for 2,000 points, because Arachnid Priority Levels are directly influenced by the size game you play (V1 rules, page 105).

If you're only going to play 1,000 point games, you are only going to be able to choose priority level one. At Priority Level One, you can only add one Blister Bug unit (90 pts), one Blaster Bug unit (90 pts), and one Hopper Unit (150 pts) for a total of 330 points (V1 rules p. 106). Adding max tunnel resources of 250 points, that leaves -- hmmm, 1,000 - 330 - 250 ... aha -- 420 points of Warriors. At 15 points each, that's 28 Warriors (remember that in V1 you can add up to ten models to a five model unit, and in V2 you can add up to 10 models to a ten model unit), so you'll need at least 8 more warriors at a minimum.

That's why I think you should be looking at a 2,000 point force. It's at this level that we can get tankers, firefries, plasmas and brains (Hmmm, where are the ripplers? probably in the Arachnid army book, which I don't have available right now - arrghhh!). All these non-Warrior extras (with the extra Hoppers and Blisters & Blasters) total 1,330 pints with another 500 points max tunnelling, so you need choose only eleven of your 28 Warriors to fill out the force (although I'd suggest you bring along a few more than eleven Warriors!).

Hope this helps! Cheers!

http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/pdf/stpreview4.pdf

in this preview on page 3 it says that 1000 pts counts as PL 1 so i work out ...

20 warriors [from my soon arriving boxed set]
+
18 warrior mega swarm [will get..]
=
600pts

Tanker Bug
=
250pts

then 150 points left over for Tunnel assets

600
250
150
=
1000pts = PL 1

is the chart stated on this pdf preview page V1 or an earlier trial rule set before its final publishing??

ta guys
