New sign&portents&Battlefield:Evolution rules

I always thought the balance was spot on before but the bugs seem to be essentially unchanged whilst the MI are at a severe disadvantage (Although I heard all weapon traits were out the window so maybe that serves to balance things out?)

Well, the unit leader rule definitely helps the MI a bit. Now losing a serg just makes the squad miss a turn basically, but at least they're not useless for the rest of the game now (or in need of saving).

Also, the BIGGEST boost to the MI is the deployment zone changes. You used to start 12" apart, but now you start 24" apart. That's a whole extra turn that the MI now have to shoot at the bugs!

As far as the Traits go, if the cards are like the BF: Evo, the traits are no longer there but at the same time they are. For example, the PF-89 LAW for the PLA Infantry Squad is a Pack weapon with Piercing/2, but it is not listed that way. Instead, everything is written out. "This weapon causes a -2 penalty to Armor rolls... It may only be fired once per turn, and never as a reaction." There are some other changes though. To follow with the example of the LAW, it now has something similar to a Lethal Zone but it always applies rather than only for indirect fire.

I tend to think that the whole unit reactions will help balance things out for the MI as well. Before, the bugs could move close enough that only a few troopers could react to them, but not anymore.

True, but I think that the idea is to have all the rules right on the card so that you don't have to memorize or hunt for what the different traits mean.

Isn't it overdoing it?
I mean, there are how many, 7, 8 traits? (including piercing and weapon types) Not that difficult to memorise even for an average 10 year old kid!

I think there will be traits in the main rulebook, but on the cards all will be written out because you should be able to play right from the box.
And if not, Hiromoon will simply do some new cards with traits

I don't think it's as much the traits as it is confusing the properties of certain weapons. I think it might be easier for some people to remember all the special rules for plasma fire easier if they are just written out than trying to remember Ready, multihit, piercing/1. When there starts to be 3 or more traits, you often start to think you're forgetting something and adding something new. (I know at least a few players who played plasma fire as flame for this reason).

For some it will be easier, for others it may be a little bit more difficult. I think of this as a quick way to get new players into the game without inundating themselves with new rules. Sure, MGP could add traits to the basic rules, but just listing what traits do (special movements, weapon traits, etc) would add 2-3 pages to the rulesheet. The purpose of the brief sheet is to allow players to go from opening the box to playing the game in just a few minutes, so the more rules there are, the harder that becomes.

Remember, we're not "losing traits", they're just not called traits anymore.

Point taken, although it also means digging through sections of data on each card instead of quick glance on 3-4 words, much easier access to info without a serious work on ones memory - something that makes life easier for somebody who sits down to unit list for the first time and tries to find out who's worth picking up for the starting list.

Oh well, survived it with 2nd ed. w40k, will survive it with the EVO -^

I like the Command stup for now, it works well. a change woudl be a bummer but oh well, and yes I am a MI player

What is absolutely silly.
I wanna see someone remember all those novel-form traits of all MI weapons and MI Equipment.

Oh, and not to forget, the entry of the standard warrior bug in the rulebook will grow about 300%.
And that of almost any other Unit and any weapon, too.
It's just stupid.

When I look at a unit card I wanna see what my unit actually CAN DO, I don't wanna read a novel!

Yes , the cardthings are a nice addition - but sorry, after a few games you know what traits do and can see on one glance what the weapon does.
You don't have to read all does dang rules and search the appropriate text line just to see whether it was now piercing/1 or piercing/2.
That's just nasty, nothing else.

If not available I will surely do stat cards and weapon lists with traits.

Well, I could try to condense it for the more experienced players...

I mean, we have weapons types, and then the traits..

Type:
-Squad
-Pack
-Internal
-One-Shot
-Infinite

Traits:
-Flame
-Piercing <#>
-Killshot
-LZ(x"/template)
-Multi-hit
-Accurate
-Ready
-Parry
-Anti-Aircraft

Right?

Heck, for BF-Ev we could just make another trait to cover the special rules concerning Machine Guns..
-Machine Gun: If a Ready action is taken to set this weapon up properly (lie prone, extend bipod, etc), then all subsequent Shoot actions will gain two bonus Damage Dice though it may only shoot in its forward facing. These bonus dice are lost as soon as the model moves. In addition, every Damage Dice this weapon rolls will count as two for the purposes of Suppression only.

That wraps it up as whooping 14 entries to remember. Kinda... well nonexistent if compared with ie. Battletech modifiers and tables that can be easily remembered after 3rd battle...

Also printing costs get in the way - surely printing 2 extra pages x number of rulebooks is cheaper than printing 2 or sometimes 3 times as much data on each and every unit card?

And the machinegun trait is a very neat idea <thumbs-up>

Assuming they want to keep the rules sheet as small as possible, it makes sense to list all that stuff on the card though. And it's not like you wont' remember it soon enough whether it's a trait reference or the full text on the card.

By my count, when you throw in weapons, movement modes, traits, etc., there are 40 different categories to list. Together they take up about 6-7 pages. If you took out the couple pics on their pages, it'd still be 5-6 pages of text.
