New Living Glorantha scenario

The announcement is a bit buried on the forum but a new new Living Glorantha scenario is out. This was designed for traditional Orlanthi and to be new player friendly in that it works for novice PCs and doesn't demand an in-depth knowledge of Glorantha. Link is

Thanks. I did write it. Didn't get an answer from Mongoose as to whether the authorship is meant to be confidential but I figure it's handy to be open about it as that way I can answer questions if needs be.

Started reading.

I very much like:

1) the introduction to how myth affects the world and the focus of people on both myth and cultural mores (e.g. suggesting a Pact role to get the Orlanthi characters up and into action, rather than 'investigating'). Its really useful to see how to play this angle - its not something I made much of in my old RQ3 days, and I've never fancied HeroQuest.

2) the combat styles: "Hammer Time"

The combat style names were inspired by Loz in Pavis Rises. That's my excuse anyway.

I see that you have interpreted results in opposed tests in a way that means if you succeeded at your skill check, but still lose the test, you do not fail as badly or miss all the benefits of the skill check.

I don't think that RAW strictly speaking? But a good practice, I'd probably forget to make the distinction when running a game, a just focus on who won the opposed test.

That is correct. As you say, it's not specifically a rule but it is a relatively common way of interpreting results. Naturally you can just rule that a loss is a loss but it tends to be useful to have an outcome for making the roll but losing the contest.

I've finished reading the scenario.

I believe that it is one of the most in-depth scenarios I have ever read: if you intended to make a point about how Glorantha can play differently from other FRPGs, I think you've succeeded. I wonder whether the word 'profound' would apply in fact.

I think it would be an excellent intro to Blood of Orlanth.

So far, the Living scenario's have given us a very good mix of different game styles: swashbuckling, pure myth and now culture orientated.

Despite all this, I am still hesitant about running Glorantha games: the whole mythic resonance, pact and myth still intimidate me.

I hope to pick up Pavis Rises soon. Perhaps with this and the LG adventures, I'd be more confident getting stuck in.

I hope you submit more adventures.

Hi Antalon, thanks very much for the kind words. As you have guessed it was originally playtested as an intro for Blood of Orlanth.

I know what you mean about Glorantha sometimes seeming intimidating. When I first started running RQ back in the 80s I steered away from Glorantha because I just didn't know what to do with it. Eventually though I realised that it was really up to me and the players to do what we wanted. Main thing is just to find what you enjoy and go with it. Let all the stuff around myth, culture, community and so on just emerge when it seems to fit. To start with, strap on a sword, some good winter clothes and head off into the mountain to rescue the maiden before unpseakable things happen to her.

I think that may be the case, but there's also a barrier to new players:

1) Ducks. Like em or love em, everyone thinks Ducks

2) 'Glorantha-philes': after so many years, it becomes difficult to convince others that it can be 'our' Glorantha.

I know that Pavis Rises is aimed at this. I will give it another go. In the meantime, I've developed my own setting to try and get my group into RQ (some are really keen, but others' are very much wanting to stick with D&D style games).

I'm also a fan of Wraith Recon for a more high fantasy setting - and hope that WR or similar setting can help bridge the gap.

Cheers

Antalon.
