Mustering out: Bonus DMs recieved from Events

Are bonus DMs recieved from Events applied before or after the die roll?

I see this kind of bonus as a kind of favour where it is up to the character
whether and when to call in the favour.

Given the random nature of character creation, I tend to lean towards allowing the player to decide when to apply the DM (if at all). This gives the players some control over what happens, while still preserving the randomness that is real life.

I do the same thing for rolls on the skill table; the player can roll the dice and then decide what table to pick the skill from - it gives them a choice of 3-5 skills, but still makes it a bit random.

Which die roll are you talking about? There are a lot in character generation, after all.

There's a lot of mustering out rolls too. Did he mean the roll to determine if you're going to have to serve another term, or a mustering out benefit roll, or what?
It looks like what was intended was the benefit roll, in which case I would say it is added to the die roll when it is made, neither before nor after.

In most cases, the DM is desirable (mo money, scoutship, etc.), but sometimes the lower roll is desired by the player (+1 stat say).

RAW, its probably automatically added to the roll, but I think most folks play it as an option - with most applying it.

IIRC in the rules it says it needs to be applied BEFORE the role, but it's 5am my time and I need to be up in two hours, so don't ask for a page number.

My players prefer to do things blind, with me telling them what they get, so I fudge a number here or there to make sure things work out (or to add convenient plot hooks for the adventure).

Didn't see anything specific to Benefits stating this...
Pg 3 concerning DMs states 'A number to be applied to a die roll before it is used.'
However, pg. 9 does mention rank 5/6 '...may apply +1 to rolls on the Benefits table' (emphasis mine). This could be seen as setting a precedent.
Pg 43 states '...Gambler skill at level 1 or better gets a +1 DM to all rolls on the Cash Table' (Have always applied this automatically like any other skill.)

I suspect most folks extend the 'benefit' concept to include the benefit of choice when applying DMs (I do).

From my point of view as the referee the mustering out benefits are
among those things that may be interesting, perhaps even important,
for the player in question, but do hardly influence the setting I prepa-
red in any way. Leaving the choice how to handle bonusses and mo-
difiers to the players gives them a few more decisions to make, and
in a way making decisions is what roleplaying is about. In the worst
case the player's decision will force me to modify the introductory ad-
venture of a campaign somewhat (e.g. based upon whether the cha-
racters have a ship or not), but a random choice or strict adherence
to the rules could have exactly the same result. In the end mustering
out benefits are a "character thing", the area of the players, and not
a "setting thing" within my responsibility as the referee.
