MRQ Conan?

I've heard much about the Mongoose Rune Quest rpg, and I've heard how the system would fit Conan well.

In what way?

I don't have Rune Quest, and I'm not familiar with it. Can someone list the ways that they thing RQ is superior for Hyborian Age gaming rather than Conan d20?

It's superior for those Conan RPG fans that like MRQ/BRP and would like an official version of those rules in print for the Conan setting.

This topic has come up a number of times, you could try a search. I don't normally answer questions by suggesting a search, but this topic just degenerates into a flamewar on this sub-forum.

If you're really interested in discussing the merits of a MRQ version of Conan, you might be better off posting in the MRQ sub-forum or the BRP site (the BRP site has a lengthy thread about Conan right now). It shouldn't be that way, but there you go.

The basic difference is class vs classless sytem. About 3 weeks into my first DnD game, I decided I didnt think levels where a great idea, but had no idea what to do different. This was in 1977, and I have not really changed my opinion.

Conan RPG is certainly better than a lot of systems. I play it rather than do the work of a conversion. I would rather play in MRQ Conan, but am OK with what we have.

I know others are violently anti-anything but Mong. Conan. Thats fine, but I have other things to do besides fight with people about it, especialy as most of them are folks I enjoy talking to on other subjects.

So follow the above advise, and ask this on the MRQ list, and you will get answers without the flames.

And remeber, they could have changed it to Conan 4e. shudder, a horror fit for a Lovecraft game.

Or, Conan and Lovecraft, ala Call of Cthulhu. The wonderful possibilities of a MRQ(BRP) Conan RPG. The gaming goodness for a GM to able to draw from these two settings, using a similar system (base BRP) would be awesome.

Most of you REH fans know what I'm talking about, those others might want to research the relationship between Lovecraft and REH and the crossovers of their settings. REH's Hyborian Age is canon history of my CoC games.

d20 fans aren't left out of the Conan/CoC crossover possibilities either, There is the excellently written OOP d20 CoC by WotC (I own it) and I gather that there's a newer version of a d20 take on CoC, but I'm not familiar with it.

BTW, the BRP site I was referring to is:

You might try avoiding strawman caricatures of their opinions then...

I do not know of anyone who is violently opposed to Conan being run in anything but Mongoose Conan. I do know people, and am one myself, who think that MRQ specifically would not work well.

Read more threads here then, there where several nasty comments made recently aout MRQ right here. Not sure how you missed them.

Like I said though it is not worth fighting about. The goose will publish what they think will sell. I am flexible enough I can play Conan in MRQ or D20. Both systems are OK by me, heck I might play in both.

For what is worth, I have recently moved my games from d20 Conan to an Elric!/Call of Cthulhu mix, and it works like a charm, much better (for us) than d20 Conan in terms of rules, feel and and flexibility. As always, YMMV :)

I am a recent convert myself after purchasing the Chaosium generic BRP book. Currently I'm eyeing the Elric/MRQ stuff rather keenly.
