More Bang for your Buck

Apologies if I'm going over old ground here, but a search on the topic proved inconclusive.

Under heavy artillery it states that the damage per unit within the firezone is 2d6+1. Now, elsewhere, I've read that means the best result that can be achieved is 7 - on par with a 40mm grenade.

Is this correct, or do you determine the total damage by adding one to the sum of the two dice? We are talking about heavy artillery, after all.

Yup thats correct heavy art is 2xD6+1..... giving a max of 7, the question is does it count as having elevated position, after all it is raining in from the sky.... this would give it +2, but I would assume that if this was the case it would be mentioned.

I suppose this is actually heavy mortars rather than actual heavy artillery.

Cordas has it right.

Saint, you have to be careful quoting the dice rolls in BF:Evo

2xD6+1 is roll 2 d6 and add 1 to each die seperately, giveing 2 seperate scores of between 2 and 7. This is what Heavy artillery gives you per target.

However, if you look at P.3 of the Adv Rulebook 2D6+1 would require you to roll 2 D6, add them together and then add 1 to the total, opssible scores of between 3 and 13.

The x is important. Your misquote of the die roll could cause great confusion.

Point taken - I sit corrected.

Nevertheless, the idea that heavy artillery can only inflict one more point of damage than an assault rifle still appears ridiculous to me - especially at 50 points a pop.

2D6+1 sounds far more realistic.

Still, the point about elevated firing positions is an interesting one.

Ah, but it's not an elevated firing position, to be so the artillery would need to be within 15" of the target and more than 6" above it. I guess off table artillery is abstracted as being >15" away.

I would agree with it being more than 15" away, but I would also say that the top of its trajectory is way WAY higher than 6".... I am fairly certain that if we where to question Matt about this he would say that "elevated position" is already factored into the artillery profile.

It would have just been easier if they has said Off Board Mortars, and OB Heavy Mortars.... As given the stats that what it is... It would also have left space to introduce real off board artillery later in the game.

One thing that I would have liked would have been for artillery to cause as many hits per model under the template as the size score of the model. So that a Size 2 vehicle took 2 lots of art damage (a Shadow being on the receiveing end of heavy artillery would take 4x (D6+1).) You could further clarify this that at least half half the model must be under the template for the shooter to take advantage of the size rule.

Agreed to the top of it's trajectory being way higher than 6", but the rules as written specify firing position not peak altitude of projectile, and anyway, more than 15" away so the point is academic.
