Mongoose Runequest vs Heroquest 2

EDG

Mongoose
Heroquest 2nd Edition is apparently going to be released on July 1st... what's the relationship between its version of Glorantha and the Mongoose one? Are they going to be running side-by-side and parallel to eachother?

MRQ is 2nd Age Glorantha - Godlearners and EWF
HeroQuest (both editions) is 3rd Age Glorantha - Hero Wars and Lunar Empire.

- Of course if you prefer one setting and the other rule-set there is no reason why you cant use either set of rules for the other setting - both MRQ and HQ2 are Generic rule-sets after all...

Hi,

One of the key issues with the Heroquest Core Rules, new Glorantha books is that due to the nature of the game mechanics they are virtually stat free, so they actually work as a great big Gloranthan resource book. The Sartar Book for example is 320 Pages (the unillustrated version) and has almost no game stats, so it will be exceptionally easy for a GM with a copy of Gods of Glorantha (Avalon Hill), Cults of Prax (Chaosium), Cult Conpendium (Moon Design) or Cults of Glorantha vol I and II (Mongoose), plus a few creative tweaks of the MRQ rules to play an excellent Third Age Gloranthan campaign amongst the Orlanthi. I can also recommend the book for people playing Second Age Orlanthi, as there are lots of details that convert between the two periods.

HQ Glorantha books are almost stats free.
I have the TENTACLES OMEGA Convention preview edition of the "Sartar" book in hands, and have to admit that it is AMAZING even without illustrations and maps.
If you really like glorantha - doesn´t matter if 2nd or 3rd age - make sure to buy the HQ setting books.

By the way:
Buying the HQ2 rulebook is also not a bad idea. Even if you don´t swap to HQ and continue to play MRQ, you can adapt a lot of ideas from HQ.

You want more gritty rules, and stats, etc. for MRQ? Go and buy Chaosiums BASIC ROLEPLAYING as 400 pages book of houserules.
You want more storytelling and flair in your MRQ? Go and buy Moon Designs HEROQUEST 2 as source for houserules, and suggestions for gamemasters.

You have all three:
Congratulations, now you never need to buy another RPG at all. :-)

+1 for Andre's comment!!! Who needs other stinking RPGs if you own all three of these games?

There is a snippet of my review about HQ2 in Jeff Richard's blog at LiveJournal (and flames from the fans of previous versions of HQ). The whole review is in the Glorantha discussion group

The bottom line of all is: HQ2 will not help you much if you are running a MRQ campaign as the only relevant part of it is the magic system which is not explored in detail in the basic book. It can however be regarded as a very useful collection of GM hints that will work for any system, so try and get it if you can.

Sartar, OTOH, is really, really useful and gives a depiction of Orlanthi society that is deeper than any MRQ supplement (though I haven't read BoO yet), and the few HQ2 stats in it do not "get in the way". The magic is also rune-based, so it is very easy to adapt the cult description to RQ magic, which is also rune-based.

The only problem is that Sartar will not be available in July, because Moon Design has not completed the production process yet (maps and illustrations are missing). But by all means, manage to preorder a copy as soon as Moon Design sets a release date for it! You will not regret it.
