Mongoose minis for VAS?

Iron Domokun

Mongoose
Looks like you VAS fans are in for a treat. Saw a couple of Sandrine's CAD designs for two WWII ships today, Cardinal Richelieu and Warspite. Both looking very nice (although I know nothing about the actual ships themselves). Steve Cole said that the pics made him want to do some more WWII naval gaming. ADB will probably have them up on their Facebook page at some point, I'll link to the pics when that happens. Can't give you direct link to the photos in their forum because that tends to attract spambots.

Possibly, but there needs to be some considerable thought before entering that market - there are a lot of established players in the field with good metal or resin and no intellectual property issues with things like Shapeways (which Im only just becoming aware of) to hold back production there.

Myrm, you may be right about the competition in the market. No doubt Mongoose has considered this issue. I don't see what Shapeways has to do with any miniatures that would be produced by Mongoose, however? Unless people were pirating the designs?

My point about shapeways is precisely that with WWII warship designs being freely accessible its kind of hard to even need a pirate as lots of people will have access to plenty of images and cross-sections, the original ships are not protected for IP any more so anyone can make a base image to go into shapeways and lots of people can just go make, and 3D modellers abound for fairly easy generation of designs leading to much more easy cottage industries in such places because we have plenty of designers who can go to a third party for the production side and can design faster than a sculptor can scult for some things - if you can go to SHapeways, buy 10 ships from 4 different designers and pay them all up easily then its less of an issue than having to go find a single minis supplier with all your needs.

On top of that the ease of access does make for even less exclusivity in the marketplace.

Did I miss an announcement? Is Mongoose planning to produce mini's for WWI/WWII Naval?

All I can say at the moment is that it is being given serious consideration...

Im just glad you went for a common scale so players can add them to what they allready have. At least in similar scale. I myself own tons of WAS minis <a scale all its own> so its to late for me now. But the big ships really draw new players to the table and game. When I do my demo's.
Cant wait for next yeears start on cons. Im planning a big Japanese Vs American battle. OOOOh my thats alot of planes on the table. Cant wait.

Sadly, I went 1/3000 scale... and Mongoose is going 1/2400...

On the other hand, 1/2400 scale isn't common over here in the UK, so it might prove to be profitable to supply...

Depends on how expensive the models will be... any idea, Matt?

We are aiming for them to be the cheapest 1/2400 range of this kind of detail anywhere. They will be more than typical 1/3000 scale models, but I think you will find them most affordable...

Again, that is the plan, the decision has not been made yet. We'll be covering this in the State of the Mongoose.

I am really jazzed to hear that someone is finally going to produce naval mini’s aimed at today’s markets.

Right now I play at my nearest FLGS and make it a point to drift through all the ones that are within driving range to see what is happening. For mini’s, historicals are virtually extinct unless someone brigs them from home for show and tell. But no one plays them. They do play Warmachine, Malifaux and some others.

What appears to be the difference? 1. The local shops can get them through an actual distributor. And 2. The companies support the product with rule, figures/mini’s and organized play. Today gaming is not about recreating a battle that isn’t even taught in schools anymore. It is about 2-6 people getting together with balanced forces that they put together without the need to do major research and playing out a fun (emphasis fun) game in about 2-4 hours. Rinse. Repeat.

They absolutely will not spend days hunting through a few dozen independent web stores to try and put together a reasonable fleet. They will buy the “X” faction fleet/army box that has been pre-balanced to be equal to the “Y” faction box. Will they buy individuals and build up more ships? Yes. As long as the company releases “official” fleet lists and a balance point system.

And more important, that they have an organized play campaign system with at least quarterly contests.

I really hope the WW2 line happens and is successful, though I really can’t stand the introduction of carriers (in table top mini’s gaming) . But a successful WW2 line may pave the way to the much better lines of WW1 and the Pre-Dreadnought era. 8)

Sooooooo. Wondering 2 things:

a) with potential of VASv2 in future should I hold back from starting VAS and wait for V2 or take the plunge? I do have plenty of other projects to keep me occupied. And if the Mongoose models are as detailed as they say then cool!
b) any chance of modern ship game in some hopefully-not-so-distant-future?-)

I'd take the plunge, personally. I'll get a couple small fleets if/when Mongoose releases them, but for anything bigger than a 5pt Raid equivalent, I'll stick to my 1/6000 Figurehead fleet.

I got my initial 5pt Raid for about $25 US. At that cost, there's no reason to wait IMO.

My guess on VAS II is its going to be awhile and I would hate to see anyone missing out on a great game of naval warfare. So if your really interested jump in.

If some of the posts on the other site are correct, a BB would be 7 to 9 inches. That is a bit too big to use at almost all of the FLGS's around here and I definitely couldn't at the house. On one of the standard tables half a dozen figs that size would be stacked up nearly touching.

Well. 7 inches, multiply that by 2400. 16800 inches. Multiply by 2.5(to get approx cm amount), 42000cm. So aprox 420m.

How long ww2 battleships were? If they were 400-500m long then seeing the scale yeh. About what I would expect.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bismarck_class_battleship

Bismarck says 246m. So 24600cm or 9840inches which in that scale would be 4.1 inches.

So I think the 7-9 inches is overexaggerating OR the scale won't be 1:2400(or i have misunderstood how scale system works :D)
