Well, the fight in the beamless Centauri thread did spin out of control real fast. It would have been helpful to have someone (with the authority) ready to intervene right then and there.

Even more difficult when it takes place over the weekend. . .

On that point... how is one from another country or hemisphere for that matter to know what is slang in one region to another. All the words you guys/girls have said thus far have absolutley no reference to any of the slang terms we use here in Canada. And for that matter if there were similarities they might be as extreme of hurtful terms as you are used to over the pond.

For that point a little editing or nudge from someone in PM or otherwise would be helpful in these matter too.

But I fully agree with NO ABUSIVE language at all should be on these forums just need to know what is abusive and what is not. So warnings would be nice from Mods or other players would be helpful.

Cheers :)

It goes to intent. One might call someone, say, a Freak Boy - but he and I both know the in-joke to that. If someone else was to launch into an assault against another poster and ended it by calling him a twit, that would be abusive, no matter how mild the term used.

Agreed Mat. I didn't see the "centauri beam" thread in question, but I agree with your statement fully.

Okay, I'll explain the issues.

First off, this forum has gone the best part of seven years without needing a heavy handed approach. It has been known as easy going, and I for one would very much like it to continue in this vein.

Second, if we had stringent rules, and if they were enforced, then you, David, would have been banned this weekend (along with others) for what happened in the beamless Centauri thread.

I've never yet come across a forum where what was said would have been cause for a ban. Certainly the site that I moderate, while fairly strict, wouldn't have seen either party banned, just told not to do it again and the thread locked.

Matt said:
We deleted the thread, sure, but you cannot tell me you did not know that was going to happen when you made your posts, nor do I think you were unsure of why it had disappeared.

Nor was I. That doesn't mean it's not bad moderation to fail to inform me of this fact, or anyone else involved in the thread, or issued warnings. The fact is LBH did issue warnings, and having Mongoose staff take action after your volunteer mod has dealt with the issue is yet more bad moderation.

Matt said:
If people are new or they have trodden into some grey area that has not cropped up, they will be told. If they are being abusive, then they should expect to be removed, one way or another.

As for your suggestions above, they would be great if we could dedicate someone to watch the forums. Unfortunately, we can't, and if a thread starts with a reasonable post, but is then followed by three dozen comments that have to be removed, then we have to delete the whole lot - otherwise, posts have to be removed on an individual basis, and we just cannot spare someone's time to do that.

You've got LBH, and there are any number of other members here who'd be willing to be volunteer mods. You could touch all of the Mongoose Infantry members for a start. You've got no manpower limits at all. You don't need a Mongoose employee to moderate.

Matt said:
For site rules, all we have ever said is 'play nice' which, surely, should be obvious. If you feel the need to be abusive, whether it is towareds another poster or Mongoose as a whole, please take it elsewhere.

That is how it has to be. If anyone cannot live under those conditions, there are plenty of other forums out there. This one is for Mongoose's games, not attacks on others.

There are definitions of nice that people here clearly don't agree on. A set of explicit rules would solve any "grey areas" as you've called them quite neatly. Please don't think I'm attacking you personally or your company - I'm criticisting the running of this website and I'm not the first to raise concerns over these issues.

The problem is the definition of 'grey'... :?

Well, if you have to ask, it is probably, by definition, a grey area. :)

Calling someone a berk, for example, would be a black and white issue.

calling someone a "f***** t***" should be black and white too....

Most forums have a set of rules stickied at the top, warning against trolling, flaming and insults

They'd not be difficult to add

@ CJ: My guess would be that it is related to the end of ACTA minis line, and deletion of the Fan Fiction section. License, license, license :x

The Privateer Press forums has rules where if I say the F word, it replaces it with text saying "for forum rules, please look at this website". This led to problems with "pocketwatch", but they made rules for that too.

I agree that something needs to be done, but it doesn't have to be extreme, nor does it even have to be a warm body.

And I agree that you Brits have some very weird insults... if I called someone a numpty, I would just get a quizzical stare in response, followed by a "uhm, what?"

I was quite surprised to see that a MGP staffer has a quote with "Wanker" in it  doesn't bother me but amusing.............

I do my best, but even I can't cover the whole forum.

Matt could ask the MI, but that's not what they signed on for. It would be on a volunteer basis only. I volunteered back in the days of heavy forum SPAM since I was on here a lot and SPAM threads were easy for me to spot.

There are manpower limits.

Indeed,, same as Alan Rickman/Hans Gruber references and the ocassional reference to events being the will of a certain holy figure (less of those since OB left the company).

OK folks, for those of us across the pond it would be really nice to have British slang words defined. I mean, 1/2 the time I don't know it someone is being insulted...or complimented!! LOL

I personally like the British slang for cigarette. It's considerably different then what it means here in the states.

Indeed, phrases like, "Bum us a fag" can be quite amusing if taken out of context :)

They could ask the MI, and they could ask ano number of other people around here, too. There's scores of people here, must be plenty that would be willing to mod, and many hands make light work. If there's a manpower limit, LBH, it's a self-imposed one.

WRT Urobach, there was a lot of speculation on why his threads were repeatedly being deleted with no reason being given. Some suggested it was for using copyrighted names such as Centauri or Minbari, a lot of jokes were made regarding his next Moonbari or Canteuri projects. Some thought it was specific ship names that were disallowed, such as "Here is my replacement Adira model". This is the first time it has been pointed out (at least to my knowledge, and I regard myself as quite "up" on what goes on around here!) that it is specifically charging money for the models, that is the problem. Never was it previously explained that that was the actual "rule" being broken.

Plus as hiff said, we got posts deleted a few days ago that were not abusive, not insulting, not nasty, not against any conceivable rules that we could possibly imagine. With no explaination. I still don't know why that happened, therefore can't prevent myself from making the same "mistake" in future...

But this is the funny on this thing...I don´t have used any race names or copyrighted things for the G´Traka. I don´t have used "Narn" I know this... i am not silly. Ok..G´Traka...I think everybody knows for which race you can use the ship. the name says it.
But G´traka is NOT copyright protected. Or...???

Ok the phrase : "My replacement for the Adira" is speculative.
But i don´t sayed "THIS IS THE" replacement for the official adira from MGP. I sayed it is MY ,for MYSELF, to have an ship of this typ.
With the option this it is nicer.... I know definitly i have caused damage with the Valerius and the Venator on the Adira and Liati orders. And i am sorry about that. But the players, fans and customers decide what looks good. And on the other side... no one from the MGP staff have ever contact me in the past and sayed: "this is illegal" don´t do this, you break rules. No, nothing, not one word. MGP don´t learn out this errors. Sadly.

But i have learned, now.
And: "I stand between the star and the darkness,...I am grey".

I recommend http://www.google.com just stick the word into the search box, or put "define:" before it (eg. "define:fag") ;)
Failing that, http://www.urbandictionary.com is a great place to find those strange words, acronyms or insults.

still would be nice to see some of the ships from the fanmade source packs as these are not official so would think would be ok.
