Mobile Suit Gundam 00

Hi.

The most recent (at the time of writing) addition to the long-standing Gundam franchise is Mobile Suit Gundam 00 - and I'd like to suggest that both as a RPG and as a wargaming setting, it would be pretty cool!

Set in a 'new' timeline distinct from those seen in earlier Gundam series (such as the Universal Century and the Cosmic Era) the first season of the 00 anime begins in the year 2307. Earth has become dominated by three regional alliances, which while working together to develop a grandiose solar-collector project in Earth orbit, deal with both their own political rivalries and with the various smaller powers on Earth which are not a member of any of the three major blocs.

These alliances are the World Economic Union, which takes in the Americas, Australia, Japan and others, the Human Reform League, led by China, Russia and India, and the Advanced European Union... the location of which you might be able to guess the by yourselves.

In the midst of this appears Celestial Being - a paramilitary organisation which has been given significant levels of funding and research over the past two hundred years, founded by a man called Aeolia Schenberg who set in motion a far-reaching plan which was intended to live on beyond his death, but who only publicly reveal themselves in 2307.

There are many cells and sub-groups in CB - not all of whom know about the others - but the story of the 00 anime looks at the cell which becomes the primary face of the organisation, who operate from the spaceship Ptolemaios - a group known as the Gundam Meisters.

The Meisters, all using code-names to hide their true identities, each pilot a distinct Gundam - a powerful mobile suit equipped with advanced technologies, most notably a power source known as the GN Drive, a unique power source that can only be constructed at Jupiter, and of which only five are known to exist. The four lead Gundams are each configured for a specific role in combat, and intended to be operated by their Meisters as a cohesive unit.

However, the Meisters themselves are by no means flawless. Each of them carries the scars and legacies of their former lives, each of them seeking some degree of justice, or perhaps absolution, by attempting to follow Celestial Being's self-imposed remit of bring war to an end.

And as you might imagine, the various alliances do not take the emergence of what they consider to be a rogue terrorist organisation lying down - and their own reactions lead to a series of events which change the course of human history...

...as do the secret machinations of other groups seeking to lay a claim on humanity's future.

In game terms, one could easily run an RPG set in this universe, drawing from the source material presented on-screen, in print (there are several manga series which act as side stories, which take advantage of the presence of the dispersed nature of Celestial Being as an organisation) and on drama CDs.

Also, one or two scales of tabletop games could be run. One could picture a system designed primarily for duels, which could even use the range of pre-existing model kits from Bandai - and which could have detailed sheets for each mobile suit.

Alternatively, a larger-scale game could be set around the kind of tactical operations which the various factions, such as Celestial Being, the three alliances, and the new agencies and factions which appear in season 2 (set in 2011) would be involved in.

So, does this sound like it might be a fun setting?

That scale would probably not work for Gundam 00.

The duel-game idea would need to have similar diagrams one might see in, say, Battletech - though designed from the ground up to cater for the mobile suits you see in this setting.

The tactical game would be more viable if the scale was pulled back significantly from BF Evo - closer to, say, something out of Aeronautica Imperialis, or even further again (depending on how one wishes to integrate the various spaceships and bases into the system).

Oh... I was planning one COMPLETELY in SCALE!!!! Yes... 28mm figs with mecha about 2-3 feet tall!!!! MWOOHAHAHAHAHAAHHA!!

Ridiculous- YES
Implausible- CERTAINLY
Fun as hell- OH YEAH!!!

Haven't worked out all the mechanics yet (advanced rules, traits), but it has potential..especially as a convention game....

Well, to give one example, the 00 Gundam - the poster mobile suit from season 2 - is 18.3m tall, even 28mm figs would be a tad off for this setting.

And I see what you are saying, but I really think something closer to AI might work better for a tactical combat game - although I guess fiddling with the scale of the ships and bases might be necessary.

or just make the scale the same as the model kits bandai make instead and save cash on the miniature production side.

That's the part I wanted to cover with the Duel scale game idea - which would be intended to work with the 1/144 HG-scale Bandai model kits (which has the widest range of available miniatures) but could be modified to, um, suit other scales, like that used with HCMPro minis (1/200) and the 1/100 scale seen with a few other Gundam 00 model kits.

I'm actually thinking that the kind of suits and deployments shown in the early episodes of season 2 might be pretty good as a starter point.

In these episodes, the Celestial Being suits are gradually introduced - with the Seravee (heavy ranged assault type) the first of the 4 suits in operation, and gradually teamed up with the 00 (general combat type) Cherudim (sniper type) and Arios (transforming high-agility type) respectively.

Along with the Gundams shown there, The Ptolemaios II - their mothership - is also involved in battle, being armed with various missiles and direct-fire weapons.

Opposing them are the A-Laws (an autonomous group used as the attack dogs of the recently-formed Earth Sphere Federation) - who have a number of different types of motherships they can be seen deploying from (either based in the sea, floating in the lower atmosphere or based in space) but are initially only seen in solo deployments.

Their forces are based around squadrons of 3-4 mobile suits, generally comprised of 2-3 GN X-IIIs and 1 Ahead (a newer-generation 'grunt' suit) - with a couple of custom Aheads used by various pilots, most notably that of a character known as Mr. Bushido.

And while there are other suits which appear, such as the older-generation suits used by Katharon (a rebel group which A-Laws are hunting down) or the likes of the Gadessa and Garazzo, the rogue Arche Gundam (seen opposing CB) as well as certain bases and static units of import (most notably a system known as the Memento Mori) it could be enough to try and start with the CB and A-Laws units mentioned above.

We had considered several "levels" of mecha for the 28mm system. Stuff representing things from personal 1 man "mecha" suits, to one man piloted but the size of a 2 story building, to a crew in something as tall as an office building (say 6-7 stories.... roughly 2 six foot men=1 story). The truly gargantuan mechs would really only be fielded in a game that you play on the floor in your socks!!!!!

But is your system limited to being on the ground?

Most of the relevant mobile suits in Gundam 00 can fly - either in an atmosphere, in space, or in some cases both (as in, the suit can transition to and from the atmosphere directly) - and battles involving them - or, at least, the more agile newer-gen suits - are far more dynamic than those seen in other genres.

(One of the reasons why I suggested going for CB and A-Laws as the first two groups to focus on is that some of the forces using older-gen suits and armour are simply too slow and plodding to compete, unless you run scenarios based around them fighting each other.)
