Missile Bays

Dracous

Banded Mongoose
There seems to be quite a lot of wasted space in a missile bay. For example, 36 Missiles take up about 3 tons. So in a 50 ton missile bay what is going on in the other 47 tons?

Especially if compared to the missile barbette, where 25 missiles (approx 2 tons) are packed into 5 tons.

I'd recommend increasing the number of salvos that can be fired by a bay.

Actually, I do suggest spelling out exactly how many missiles are in the bay internal magazine, if any.

It's basically the reason I discarded missile bays as a worthwhile weapon system.

To make it universal, all weapon systems that consume ammunition (rail-guns, missile launchers, torpedo launchers and sandcasters) need to explicitly call out how much on-mount ammo storage is present. A simple table could work like this:

Turret Barbette 50ton Bay 100 ton Bay
Weapon Type
Railgun N/1 1 3 10
Missile launcher 3 4 10 100
Torpedo launcher
Sandcaster

I would go with TOTAL mount ammo storage. If you want battery rounds you can easily calculate it. But scaling down is potentially more confusing, especially when you think about mixed turrets. A method like this will answer the perrenial problem. I would also include a line in there that assumes the weapon system has one full round already loaded - might just save your life at some point knowing that little factoid.
