Miniature quality

Mongoose
The title pretty much says it all. I'm thinking of getting some Narn, Minbari, Psi Corps miniatures but I don't have much experience with Call to Arms miniatures. What‘s the (casting) quality of the figures like?

Variable is the best way to describe it. The newer stuff tends to be good - I recently had a Shadow Omega and shadowcloak that were crisp, clean and flash free. While the older stuff can be very poor - I recently got two Omegas whose front ends were a real mess - misaligned, masses of flash and gaps full of lead.

I'm certainly not happy with my Omegas. It's the misalignment that really ruin them. Most Crusade EA i got are fine, the rest are as you say, variable.

Now for a decent Omega you'll now have to buy a Shadow Omega? A whole new definition for "suck" :(

Omega is definitely a problem ship.

As the others have said, it tends to be the older moulds that are also very popular (i.e. the canon ships seen in the show). Some aren't as bad as others but in my experience, the ships with loads of flash/defects include the Omega, White Star, Thunderbolt and the Tinashi. Most of this is manageable though, at least with some effort.

While the detail level on my new Gaim fleet was very nice, the casting for the light cruisers leaves a lot to be desired. In all four cases of the Sataaka, the molds were significantly misaligned and it took a considerable amount of time to file and round them off (several hours) so they looked clean and without losing any of the detail.

Also, one of the Skruunkas looked as if the mold had not sealed. There was flash (some quite thick) all the way around the entire ship which was a pain in the behind to clean up and make look decent as well.

I certainly hope the casting process improves a bit in the future. I like the game, but I hate having to spend inordinate amounts of time fixing problems rather than assembling, painting and ultimately playing with the models.

Cheers, Gary

They could start by fixing the stands - I just got a pack of Shadowcloaks and a hunter - the ships themselves are in great shape, the holes in the stand bases are completely filled - I'm not looking forward to digging them out. I have also recently bought 2 shadow Omegas and a Nemesis and they are both in good shape. I also just ordered 2 motherships - considering they are new, I would think that they should be in good shape. So Psi corp ships themselves should be pretty safe. EA on the other hand...

Its annoying as the quality is completely variable as has been said already. If they were cheap then it would be no big deal, but they aint cheap!

Personally I just send them back when the casting quality is rubbish, replacements have not been an issue.....

Or, for EA thunderbolts I tend to order them from the old AOG site as the casting quality is consistently far better.

As for the whole wait 2 months thing I feel like I have been waiting for things to get better since before the Armageddon book came out, and while they have for the best part the miniatures side is still a bit of a let down.

I didn't have any trouble with my White Stars...

But the Victory Destroyer, and all of the ships in the EA Early Years box set...

The Omega mold is slated for replacement, according to an earlier statement by Mongoose. As it is, it needs some work to get the parts to line up properly. Best way I've found is to run a rod through the centre section and drill out the front and back parts, then fill as needed.

That said, the last pair I bought were in much better shape than the first few.

If you're running a rod through it, might as well make it a round rod and make the rotating section, really rotate

i love b5 as we all do here, but i do find the quality of the models a right pain in the harris.
even on the new molds the quality is not fantastic, and i dont really understand why, when a company like rackham (ok going from metal now) can make such fantasticaly detailed minis with virtually no flash

That really takes some work. You have to have a rotating section OF the rod or else the rotating section of the ship just sags and sits on the rod. Sure it rotates, but it looks loike crap.
I bought some old AoG Omeags from somebody getting out of the game and by the time they got to me, most of them had come apart into at least 2 pieces, usually 3. So I tried the whole, "single rod through the hollow core of the ship to make the center rotate" bit. Ended up stuffing Green Stuff into the rotating section to secure it right and make it look better...

I haven't painted it yet, but it spins really well!
