I've been (slowly) steadily painting my EA fleet for awhile now, and It's coming along nicely, imo, but I seem to always have an urge to buy 2 more minis for every 1 I finish painting.
That being said, I'd like some advice from some veterans as to what I should look into next. 80% of my minis now are EA, but I don't have any of the Crusade era fleet minis (Marathon, Chronos, etc). I have a few Minbari, Narn, Centauri, and Vorlon minis as well, because I like to switch up what I'm painting every now and then so I don't burn out as easily.
There a definitely a few random ships I'm going to buy just to paint them, but I'd like to get a fleet box set as well. The only ones I'm not particularly interested in at the moment are the League Fleets. I'd love to start a Drakh fleet, but I don't like the minis for them.
I'll eventually (assuming no drastic changes occur) collect fleets of all the races, but for now I'm stumped as to what to purchase. When my EA are closer to being completed, I know I'd like the Centauri to be next major fleet, because I simply like the Centauri and the Royal Purple. The Shadows, to me, are just epically cool too, it's hard to resist buying them.
The Minbari are probably the lowest on my list. I have several of their ships already, so buying a fleet box will just be adding to that little pile. I like the Narn, but the minis I have of theirs seem a little small to me (compared to the EA). Maybe I just have certain ones, but the size of the models turns me off of them for now. I have enough Vorlons as well.
The ISA box interests me, I'd love to have a bunch of white stars, and the Victory seems like a great model. That box seems like one of the best deals to me, but is having 10 white stars viable now that they have more choices? Or should I snag it up now before the change the box set around? I have the same dilemma with the EA Crusade fleet box. I really like some of the models, but it would just be more EA, and certain ships (I've heard on these forums) like the Nemesis will be going somewhere else, so I'd have even less of a chance of fielding them.
After reading my wall of text, I guess my question boils down to, of the Major Race Fleet boxes, excluding all EA but Crusade Era, which do you think offers the best bang for the buck? I don't really mean dollar for dollar(I've done all the math 8) ), but instead the size of the miniatures(bigger=better), their quality(not the casts themselves, but the coolness factor(ShadowShip>Kutai), and the viability of it being a half-way decent starter for a fleet.
The minis are mostly for my personal collection. I enjoy painting them, but I play games whenever I can, so they're by no means "showcase" only. The size of quality of them matters the most to me, so the bigger and more detailed the minis, the more I'll appreciate them until I ruin them with my paint brushes. :wink: Essentially, my only size references are to EA ships, so if anyone could post approximate size comparisons to any of those I'd appreciate it. I don't need pics or anything, just a roundabout general idea. (Like if most of the Narn minis are actually slightly smaller than the average EA mini, or if I just happen to have some of the smaller ones)
So.... any suggestions?
Edit: Also, if there are any one off models that anyone thinks are a must have, I'd appreciate those opinions as well.
