Mindjammer: Traveller

Some of you may know that I worked on the Mindjammer RPG.
There are plans afoot to produce a Traveller Conversion of it. So in the link below is a survey to gauge interest in it.

Mindjammer lends itself well to Traveller, in fact embedded in it are elements of things inspired by Traveller. The setting is amazing.

Nothing like it. Mindjammers for example have a mind, they can fly themselves or be flown.
This is Transhuman Space Opera, not Fantasy Space.
:)

I heard of Transhuman Space, from what I recall it was limited to the Solar System, but in included AIs and uploaded human minds, so I guess Mindjammer adds back the interstellar elements? There is a setting called Orion's Arm, I heard they once tried to make that into an RPG setting, but left it instead as a simple setting for stories. I tried to add my two cents to it, and got a really nasty reply, I pretty much stayed away from it since, though some ideas like Magmatter are pretty good. Most FTL in orion's arm is done with wormholes, and wormholes are a pretty big deal, they are not made on the fly, they are build several light days outside of a star system by superintelligent artificial minds, they have the mass of the Moon or a small planet. I tried to be creative with that setting, but "Mr Nasty" shot me down! I have no further inclinations to exchange unpleasantries with that man!

Took the Survey, but to be honest I didn't answer some of the questions because I have not looked at the setting before. So I didn't want to have a negative impact on the fans desires.

I did say I was interested in a Traveller conversion.

I will be backing this the day it goes live.

There are elements of the Mindjammer universe I have already 'borrowed' for MTU, having the game actually converted to MgT would be icing on the cake.

I would be very interested in this game, if nothing but for the rules regarding integrating the Mindscape into Traveller. That is how I always envisioned TL14+ societies, but never had a way to play it in Traveller.

Ok, went and looked at some more info on this. One question, they keep saying this is a new edition using the Fate core rules. What were the original rules based on?

Current edition is second edition. First edition was Fate too. But a companion to the Fate: Starblazer RPG.
This is an all in one edition.

Ah, that makes sense. Thank you. :mrgreen:

Hi everyone,

Sarah here, lead writer on Team Mindjammer - I just thought I'd drop in and say "hi!". Thanks for having us on board, Matt!

Yes - the Mindjammer Kickstarter survey we ran a few weeks back gave us a 60%+ response that people would like to see a Traveller version of Mindjammer, so we have that built in as a (hopefully very) imminent stretch goal. "Mindjammer Traveller" will be a supplement for playing in the Mindjammer "New Commonality of Humankind" setting using the Mongoose Traveller rules (expected to be the new edition of the MgT rules available next spring).

Mindjammer Traveller will be a 288 page book, featuring:

  • a smooth and elegant way to play Commonality characters, hominids, xenomorphs, and synthetics (including sentient starships!);
  • rules for the Mindscape;
  • rules for dealing with organisations and culture conflict, including memetic combat;
  • details of the hyperadvanced technologies of the New Commonality of Humankind;
  • construct design systems for vessels and structures from "event horizon probes" right up to megastructures such as plateworlds;
  • deep setting background, including a complete never-before-published subsector, Outremer, where the Commonality borders the Sentient Alliance, the Successor States, and even the Venu Q-Zone.

Please stop by and pledge and help make Mindjammer Traveller a reality! You can find us at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/328469751/mindjammer-the-roleplaying-game . Also please fire away to me, Ian, John, or anyone else from Team Mindjammer with any questions. The Commonality salutes you!

All the best,

Sarah

Hi everyone,

I just did the GO FUND THIS! podcast with Matt Quiett of the Nerd's Domain today, discussing the Mindjammer Kickstarter and what we're aiming to do, including the history of the Mindjammer setting, playing Mindjammer in Fate Core vs Traveller, and lots more! It's a pretty solid overview of the setting and the Kickstarter and also what we're planning to do with Mindjammer Traveller.

You can find the podcast here: http://gofundthis.libsyn.com/ep-19-mindjammer-rpg

Cheers,

Sarah

Hi everyone,

Here's a quick update on the Mindjammer Kickstarter (http://tinyurl.com/jammerkick). We've now unlocked the Mindjammer Traveller supplement, a 288-page supplement for playing in the Mindjammer setting using the new (2nd) edition Mongoose Traveller rules. It's initially in PDF, but we're just over £18K right now, and have a print version stretch goal at £30K, so it's definitely within reach!

Please stop by and take a look, and if you like what you see please pledge to help make the print version of Mindjammer Traveller and this massive expansion of the Mindjammer setting a reality. Many of the supplements (especially the sourcebooks) are rules-light and setting-heavy, and the adventures can also be easily used with the Mindjammer Traveller rules. Right now, a £20 (appx $30) pledge gets you digital copies of eight products (and soon nine!):

  • Two adventures: THE CITY PEOPLE - exploration and adventure beyond the Frontier, incuding digipack of online gaming assets, and BLUE - deadly mystery on the devastated homeworld of a near-transcendent alien species.
  • MINDJAMMER TRAVELLER: 288-page supplement comprising rules and setting material, including the Mindscape, sentient starship characters (including deckplans and avatars), worlds and starmaps using Mindjammer's detailed world gen procedures, culture conflict, organisations, and everything you need to play in the Commonality's TL16-21 civlisation.
  • MINDJAMMER COMPANION and PLAYER'S GUIDE for the Fate Core version of the game
  • SONGS OF OLD EARTH short story collection.
  • MINDJAMMER novel.
  • and very soon CHILDREN OF ORION, the Venu Sourcebook

Also to come:

  • COMMONALITY SPACE SCHEMATIC enhanced version
  • THE CORE WORLDS sourcebook
  • and the MINDJAMMER TRAVELLER print edition.

Many other of these products are available in print too.

The Kickstarter now has 12 days to run, and we're still powering ahead and breaking through stretch goals, with new goals announced almost every day. Join us, and help spread the light of humankind's greatest civilisation to the stars!

The Commonality salutes you!

Sarah

Hey there, could you say whether the Mindjammer Traveller rules will use the Traveller 2 ed rules currently out or will they use the new ones under development and due out in March 2016? I've paid for the beta recently and am new to Traveller. I ordered the 2 ed hardback and wondered which rules to read up on first.

Thanks!

Hi Aderon!

Mindjammer Traveller will use the new 2nd edition Mongoose Traveller rules due out this March. We're developing using the beta, but will be updating as we go to make sure we're fully compatible.

Thanks for your support!

All the best,

Sarah

That's great to hear Sarah! I've played through a bit with Mindjammer (as my first FATE game), funded on the kickstarter and read your excellent novel (I am really looking forward to new novels!). I have looked over the Traveller rules (I tend to spend more time reading rulebooks now just to learn new systems) and enjoyed that too. I'll keep reading through the beta from Mongoose then.

Thanks for the response Sarah, and good luck! You're a great writer and mixing the rule systems will expand the fun and opportunities for others (and me of course).

Cheers,
Adorn
