Middle Eastern buildings

In these photos - the plain buildings are foamcore painted with texture paint

The more elaborate buildings are O guage model railroad buildings in various states of converstion (except for one - it is a playset from the movie cars - "Ramone's House of Body Art" - its the one not weathered like the others)

No 28mm is S Scale or 1/64 or so

But some may work, as long as the door is big enough many look ok.

Nice DDD figures. I have TAG stuff myself. We'll be playing a game on friday(iraqi regulars vs marines) I'll post some pics when i get back.

Nice pics!

On the scale thing O gauge kits generally 'look' right for most 28mm stuff. S gauge or 1/64 usually look waaaay too small. Most toy cars in 1/64 like matchbox and hot wheels are obviously not in scale to the figures. I've actually got a pile of the land rovers from Airfix that they did in kids snap style a few years back that will make great conversions for African technicals and some armored cars too. :)

O gauge is in the 1/43 to 1/48 range - but looks best w/ based 25-28mm figs

it is pretty common and fairly inexpensive especially on E-bay - do a search for "plasticville"

S gauge is smaller and does not look right (too small - especially doors) even though the scale nazis will tout that it is the "right" scale - also it is much more limited in the offerings available - harder to find and therefore more expensive

in much the same way current 28mm figs look better beside 1/43, 1/48 or 1/50 scale diecast vehicles - when you can find true 1/64 scaled vehicles they look too small next to most slotta based 28mm minis

Will wait to see how the real deal B.E. minis and vehicles stack up

not being a scale nazi - my philosophy is if YOU think it looks good on the table - that's good enough for me :!:

Man, my TAG marines would love to do a little door-to-door on that :D

Great work! The O scale seems to fit perfectly - most "28mm" is really 30mm anyway.

HO scale will be WAY too small - its great for 20mm figs and is the standard for 20mm gamers

The paints on the figs are Citadel - the Tank is Tamyia Model Master spray paint - the buildings are a Krylon Military Tan spray paint

What really makes them shine is that the are "dipped" w/ Mixwax Tudor Stain and then hit w/ a coat of Testors Dull Coat

"Dipping" is a term applied to using stain or ink to wash the figs - some folks literally dip the figs and wipe off the excess - it is a quick and effective way of shading

Hope this helps

HO scale is way too small unfortunately. Just right for 20mm figures though. Some parts are still useable but buildings and vehicles are far too small.

I had thought the Airfix Junior/Heller Landrover was too big, closer to 1/35th scale however the two armoured cars are very useful and as they are roughly based on French prototypes a very useful addition to an EU army. They are out of production but seem to crop up fairly often. One model shop in Belfast usually seems to have them and I usually buy all he has when I am in.

Airfix/Heller do a proper kit of a Landrover. It is a much better size than the Junior version but it is quite an old kit of an older model, is of a hardtop (easily fixed) and has terrible, treadles wheels that have to be replaced. Otherwise it is great and cheap buy. I have a couple of technicals but for one the addition of appliqué armour got a bit out of hand and it is now only useable for Mad Max style games. On the other hand it might be just the thing for a Warlord (oddly I seem to be concatenating Warhammer 40K Orks with stereotypical militias – not just African so fortunately it is not racism).

My brother has an ancient kit of a pickup truck that eyeballs out at somewhere close to the right scale. I wonder who it was made by? I suspect Monogram.

As to armament Italeri used to do a very useful set of anti-aircraft weapons that included a number of HMGs and light cannon including a DShk. They were 1/35th scale but work superbly well for technicals. Unfortunately it is out of production but knowing Italeri it will be back sooner or later and then I will buy a dozen or more of them. Other than that the weapon sets by Italeri (a bit pooh), Tamiya and Academy can provide plenty of M2HBs and .30 BMGs and other goodies. Rocket and missile launchers and decent sized recoilless rifles are a bit more scale sensitive and harder to find or more expensive. However they are not too hard to bodge together with styrene tubing and odds and sods.

Got an exact formula on the dip? I've been using distilled water, future floor polish, and a brown ink, but it semms to run right off buildings...

Depending on where you live, your tap water may include chemicals like chlorine, as well as salts and minerals, that could potentially have an effect on the chemicals in the paints/inks/polish solutions that you're mixing it with. Distilled water is nearly 100% pure. That said, I've never had a problem with it, but then I live in the Netherlands - as far as I know only Scandinavia has better tap water than us :D

i drink uk tapwater by the gallon, its better for you than bottlewater !

and ive always used it for paints and inks and as yet not found a problem, but interesting idea on the distilledwater, apparently its harmful if digested as well.
