Raise Your Force
Mercenary presents detailed rules for raising and equipping a mercenary force, training your troops and finding the best – or maybe just the cheapest – hardware on the market. Units are rated according to their capabilities in critical areas such as direct combat, aerospace defence or bombardment. Unit Traits provide additional capabilities that can tip the balance of a close-fought battle.

Enter the Marketplace
Some plans do not survive contact with the client, let alone the enemy. Mercenary gives you the tools you need to make sense of a client’s conflicting requirements and figure out what is necessary to complete the contract. Sometimes that is the same as winning the fight… but not always.

Begin Operations
The mission and ticket resolution rules allow large and small-scale operations to be quickly resolved. Referees can abstract routine events and shift focus to where the action is hottest. The scalable battle system accounts for force size, tech level, tactics, level of aggression and a host of other factors.

Lay Down Some Fire
The expanded combat rules deal with life-or-death situations where suppressing an enemy support weapon, getting a shot on target or achieving an instant knockdown can make all the difference.

Deploy Specialists
Rules for specialist troops cover anti-armour tactics, meteoric assault from orbit, hunting snipers and all manner of other situations the typical band of Travellers will never encounter. An array of specialist equipment is also presented, providing the tools for getting the toughest job done.

I snagged this immediately when I got the notice in email.
The above says weapon design rules. I don't see them in my download. Are they in this package or a future release?

Ack, sorry, that is indeed in the Field Catalogue (coming soon). Text changed.

Hello Braintrust,
If I want to design a mercenary unit similar to (Elizabeth Moon Vatta wars) Mackensee Military Assistance Corporation would this be the set to look at? I do have the MGT1st ed version mercenary and the rest of the MGT1st ed books, is this basically a rehash with some updating? Thanks in advance

Be weary of those with a privateer authorization.

I am afraid I have never read Vatta's War, but this set is completely new, from start to finish, and concentrates on making Mercenaries a new campaign style (like Element Cruisers did for naval campaigns).

Not sure if they're available elsewhere, but here are the names of the three books in the Mercenary set, plus the chapter names from the TOC

Mercenary Book 1: Mercenaries In The Far Future
Introduction / Warfare In 5-Dimensional Battlespace / Key Concepts / Travellers In A Mercenary Campaign / Running A Mercenary Campaign / Tickets / Force Capability Assessment / Unit Characteristics / Force Capability Record / Mission And Operation Resolution / Resolving Combat / Tactics / Environment / Detailed Resolution

Mercenary Book 2: Running A Mercenary Force
Introduction / Forming A Unit / Recruiting And Training / Equipping The Unit / Unit And Personnel Traits / Finding Employment / Running The Unit

Mercenary Book 3: In The Field
Introduction / Using Tickets / Background Information / Team Or Section Tickets / Platoon Tickets / Company Tickets / Battalion Tickets / Specialist Tickets / Ticket-Adventures / Brokers And Dealers / Allies And Opposition

Hopefully this might help to decide if this would fit with what you're looking for. I've never read Moon's Vatta wars, so I can't be a direct help with that.

Oh, and @Matthew, I assume these books are still in the "old" trade dress (i.e. with the grey hexagons/splash and the blue-ish bars at the top bottom), and have not been redone with the "new" layout?

Also, are there plans to provide 2D versions of ship plans in the Specialist Forces book (or even swap out the 3D isometric plans)?

Indeed, they are the very last books to be done in the old style.

We'll take a look at the 2D plans, but it may be a little while (busy beavers at the moment!).

I just received my Mercenary copy. Kickstarter, officer edition… and oh my does it look amazing!

The only problem I have is that my Traveller bookcase is full, and I’m gonna have to expand… :D

As always, though I’ve seen the contents before in PDF form, it’s something else to hold the physical books in my hands! Awesome!

I know how that problem goes.

We have been discussing getting another bookcase, I just may have failed to mention that the new one wouldn't be a bookcase - it would be a Traveller Bookcase :D
(I'm sure the family will understand, right?... Right?)
