Medkits???

Ah, no problem. Just wait for the first software bug which makes the
autodoc vivisect the pilot, and they will jump at any chance to hire a
human medic. 8)

Nah, it'll probably perform sex reassignment surgery.

Yep, if you do not have enough female volunteers for that vacuum world
colony you can always reprogram the autodoc to adjust the male - fema-
le ratio.

Given what's going on in the world right now and the medical violence trans people face, that is really not a cool joke to make.

Of course I could direct you to the scene in my S&P article on this topic, where at higher tech levels your ship's medic usually spends increasing amounts of his time furiously screaming at a wall panel.

Is it just Medics ya all got a hate on for? ;)

I wouldn't let a non-medic trained person use an Autodoc on me...

I do replace stewards with luxuries though. Let the Steward position be the Purser and do trading and other important functions.

And I wrote an S&P article for that, too ...

Which one? I would like to read that.

In skimming all this I just kept thinking of what I tell my players.

You can try, but you can only do so much. If you don't have the right medikit/first aid kit (two diff things) you are at -6 right there. Why, because you don't have the tools. You can be the worlds greatest surgeon of all time, but you aren't removing an appendix with just a pocket knife and the sewing kit you got issued in basic... well not easily anyway (yes I've seen an appendectomy).

Of course there is a difference between 'first aid' and something more significant. Growing up I had these two great Korean/Vietnam era army first aid kits. Went on the web belt tied to the leg tons of bandages etc. I took them on all our Boys Scout campouts etc. I actually got to use one one, a friend stepped on glass I pulled out the big bandage-large pad of gauze to go on top of the wound and then the two ties to go round-and-round the foot and be knotted over the bandage. The doc at the ER was impressed by the job I did, even more when he found out I was 13 at the time.

If I didn't have that first aid kit I could have torn a shirt wadded a piece up and the rest to tie it down but not as good.

A medikit comes with more, as the book says starts with like BP cuff etc and goes up from there. First aid is "treat what you can see/determine at the moment. Medics and Paramedics deal with more. I can clean your wound splint your leg bandage that cut on you head (a little antibiotic cream too)... These folks can get your leg splinted in a nice rigid air cast, on a real back board, pack your wound after cleaning, give you pain meds, check your vitals listen to breathing (and know what they are looking for) etc. That requires more than is in ANY first aid kit.

So, no gear/kit I do -6. As the kit is more complete for what is needed I drop that down. Best they get is +0 for having the right medikit for the job.

Yeah :) I've long rolled those into the Steward's functions too. Less about pampering the pax, more about getting them and the rest of the business matters. At least on small ships, luxury cruise liners though will have all kinds of catered to personal functionaries.

Yeah, the Cunard line has real people to bring you food and fluff the pillow.

Tramp freighters have a Purser who better find and purchase that critical, hard to find part the engineer needs so we can get off this rock... Oh yes, don't forget to find us some cargo while your at it.

S&P 90. Balancing The Books. There's a bit about the Steward's various roles in the article, just after the introduction and before I get to the less interesting business and finance part.

I came up with a variety of different roles for Stewards, ranging from, well, chef and purse string holder right through to pimp and drug dealer on the side. You never know when the passengers might prefer a more human customer service to some luxuries they can just get out of a vending machine.

Maybe its just me Phil, but I really like writing my own stuff that dovetails with Traveller, and always have. Medical rules, starport admin rules, extra info on low-tech fission plants... but then I'm a writer (history) so maybe I just have that urge to fill up white paper ;)

What a great article Alex! The part about liability and partnerships should be in every iteration of the Traveller rules! Well done. Not read past that yet ....
