Matriarchies

Brilliant. Combine that with the Transhuman thread - we need a race of uplifted elephants. Ever read SchlockMercenary?
Would be an exceptionally good idea, not sure if Mongoose would ever do it, but I think it should be done.

There is one in science fiction, ever read Footfall?

Base them on the monarchy similar to Babar except there's a queen and she favors surrounding her court with females. The Loxodonta Sapiens are a transplanted uplifted species of the ancients and also host a human population on their world but won their right of dominance there long ago and there's been peaceful coexistence. Yeah, I'm having fun. If there can be cats, dogs dolphins and newts, let there be elephants!

But you know what, I think Amazon Warrior women look better than fat Elephant People! ;)

Oh yes - I favour an upright, bipedal stance for Loxodonta Sapiens, with grasping hands, as it seems to fit in with how the vargr have changed, and somewhere around the 3.5-4.0m height mark. Seem about right?

How about a 6-foot tall rabbit with hands and white gloves named Bugs?

I believe it might be a record for Tom - 2 completely irrelevant, disruptive Troll-posts in 3 posts. Either add something relevant or humorously semi-relevant to the conversation or STFU. Your choice.

This reminds me that I had placed marginally uplifted Elephants on a world in Daibei for a campaign there. They were working, not just living, so the assumption was a scattered populace that these were just one part of. Full-sized elephants would be great fun to transport, of course, which is why the most commonly seen and widely spread are the Miniphants.

I'm thinking for Loxodonta Sapiens chargen: +6 Str/End, -4 Dex, -4 Soc, 3 pts natural armour (thick skin), get a +2 DM to grapple at personal range and can grapple at close range (no DM).

Oh come on Rick, have you no sense of humor? Must you be offended by everything I say? I think the idea of a walking talking Elephant man is equally humorous as Bugs Bunny, anyway didn't they have those in Star Wars? Sides the topic is Matriarchies, not Elephant people, so it seems like we already got off the subject, a walking talking "wascally wabbit" is just as irrelevant as "Barbar the Elephant". By the way are you talking bout a full size Elephant or would you rather shrink them to fit aboard a human scale spacecraft? Elephants are quite big you know, a spaceship designed to carry them, might mean 100-ton fighters with jump Drives.

Just finishing off Traveller Sword Worlds and the very patriarchal tone made me pause. Does the OTU have any matriarchal societies at all? I really can't think of any that aren't fundamentally patriarchal or non gender based (Hiver come to mind).

There's at least one human society that is matriarchal in the Solomani Rim, I remember reading about it (though I can't recall the name sadly) in the old GURPS Traveller Rim of Fire supplement.

It's actually pretty interesting since it takes the other vein of matriarchal societies (on a track I've been working on as well where I've come to realize that you can have a matriarchal society that is extremely "sexist" without changing all that much) where the women do not have to be Amazons and the men "feminine."

edit: Santorini in the "Rim of Fire"

Actually Tom, elephants have matriarchal groups and that's why I used them for an example. Making them an alien or uplifted race makes sense for Traveller considering how many others have terran analogies.

Yeah, have whatever weird aliens you want, not that I object. There were skeletal aliens in the original movie Alien that looked sort of like elephants, they were big.
Remember this guy?

He looks sort of like an Elephant doesn't he. What sort of alien race would this represent? They certainly are big.
What would the look like if you put flesh on these bones?

Interesting how they later decided to make them into more humanoid giants. I don't suppose classic Traveller has a race of giants.

Not to get way off track (again) but is that the alien or is that a very organic environment suit?

Back to the topic, what would be good reasons for matriarchal societies whether for non-humans or human populations? Biological need or a historical cause putting females in power? Not being a sociologist and/or an anthropologist, I'm not sure how male based humans have been in the past. Are there instances of females significantly controlling groups as opposed to sharing governing responsibilities such as the queen of England? Is rule by a particular merit possible to grant females near exclusive control in any know Earth society?

I notice stories featuring matriarchies are either sex fantasies or gender tales. Many though feature various disasters that move the female population into power.

I think most societies go through a phase where power is divided, with males dominating hunting and warfare and females dominating farming/gathering and housing. If warfare or hunting is a main occupation of your society, it will become more male-dominated and vice versa. It is interesting that what we know of the Minoan civilisation shows a very strong female role, yet when the population of the mediterranean increased and warfare became more common, the societies were more and more male dominant, until you end up with the classical Greek civilisations in which women are very much second-class citizens.

That could mean agricultural or garden worlds with little conflict could might gravite toward females in positions of power due to instinctual nurturing natures when a male protective nature is not in high demand. It could be with any world that has a very low need for or expectation of aggression.
