Matching the Show - Ideas Wanted!

If your play group agrees, use the house rules. thats the joy of table top gaming. You don't HAVE to go by the rule books.

I have no problem with house rules, and if you are only playing within your gaming group that's fine - the problem is when you go to a tourney or to some other group and find they play a different game to you.

I've seen it several times at tourneys (different games to ACTA) where arguments have ensued because one of the players honestly believes their house rules are official......

Regards,

Dave

This is why I’ve gone through the effort of documenting anything that is a house rule, including citing what rules they either replace or substitute.

Allows me to say 'hey, where did we get that rule?' then page through it and say 'oh! right here!'

run a tourney with your house rules :)

Which is the only thing that really sucks; either I/we can totally avoid tournaments (not too far fetched, actually, no one in SA plays :() or we play the occasional regular rules just to stay current on tactics and game play.

OR! I work on wide dissemination of said house rules in hopes of greater acceptance of them to include hosting of a tournament using said house rules (stated and posted well ahead of time, of course!)

What I'd like to see from the show is the iconic ships performing up to snuff, and particularly the EarthForce Navy being more than the semi-decent to decent punching bag they end up as in ACTA... that, and Narn being the formidable naval force they're acclaimed to be. Ships like the Omega and G'Quan both being semi-decent to subpar choices for their priority level seem to be out of line with the show (Not to mention the fact that Omegas appear to be non-boresight, such as in A Call to Arms [The Movie]).

I will not make innuendo based off of that statement, as difficult as it is to resist

Good luck with that effort, but I rather suspect you won't see much return for your effort.

For every *problem* there are loads of potential solutions and getting a general concensus (except in very, very, simple cases) is exceedingly unlikely. You can see it here whenever anyone proposes a new rule or mechanism to get around some of ACTAs perceived issues - some will like, others will hate it, and about half a dozen additional solutions will pop up, and no one can agree which is "best".

It's like trying to design anything by committee - it just doesn't work most of the time since you spend more time arguing than actually doing anything constructive.

That doesn't mean I'm not in favour of debating suggestions for house/new rules. Now that we know that the mini line is going to be resurrected, I'm a whole lot more hopeful that a 3rd edition will eventually be forthcoming and maybe just some of these suggestions might find an official home! :)

Dave

maybe - although following the debate and playing with stuff meant alot of the things that tended to be agreed on that would be nice to tweek in 2nd Ed I put into Darkness Rising

FAP
Shadow rules (with proper fighters)- more ships for them and Vorlons
amedments to a number of ships (Demos, G'Quan, G'Varhn, Octurion, Abbai, decent Drazi war level ship.........)
New Unique Admirals

had a lot of nice feedback, running a themed tournament - so thus far a good return

:D

I'm not meaning to brag (well maybe a bit) but I have played ACTA with CC on my team.

Things I wish I could afford :(

Would probably have to host it in Austin. I don't know anyone that would actually want to come to San Antonio to game

I'm not sure if this has already been suggested in another form but I just had to put it out there :)

Hyperspace Ambush - Ships with advanced jump engines can exit hyperspace and fire imediately on any ship in range. The attacked ship has to take a crew quality check. If unsuccessful then that ship is unable to use dodge, interceptors etc to negate any attacks.

I was thinking about this when I watched a few old episodes and the B5 movie 'in the beginning'. It would reflect how ships with advanced jump engines are able to literally take another vessel by surprise. Works well for Shadows and even the Minbari!!

What do you guys think?

Nope. Denver. It's mo betta here.

Vorlon heavy cruiser absorbing beams fired from shadow vessels.

Vorlon destroyer actually being capable of destroying a shadow ship in a single shot/ram action and surviving.

Edit: Ooh, ooh - more special actions for Ancients, Vorlons and Shadows - and automatic passes for the special actions that they do get. Crew Quality for ships without crews, or with godlike ancient beings for crews, or with intelligent living hulls is a bit of an odd concept.
If you're going to lump a race with a very limited special action selection, you may as well let them use them more than 50% of the time when they try.

Another edit: Vorlon telepathy! Special rule where any telepath who tries to use their puny mortal mind skills around a Vorlon ship gets their brain fried. Or just basic vorlon telepathy giving them access to telepathic dodge etc.

2 small suggestions.

1) Make other races less likely to surrender to the pak, on 2 grounds:
a) It would be especially degrading.
b) The pak would eat the recently deceased crew members rather than giving them decent burial, and could well start in on the badly wounded.

2) Make other races more likely to surrender to the Vree, on the grounds that the Vree are quite likely to send them home, in exchange for a fee. Prisoner exchange/parole/ransom/extortion - different words, same result. The prisoners go home, and the Vree get richer.
