Master Skill List

Red Bart

Mongoose
I don't really know if this has already been done, but I made a master skill list, compiling all skills from the Core Rulebook and all nine rule supplement books (if they had any additional skills). Here is the link to the pdf if you are interested: Traveller Master Skill List

Very handy indeed, but the 'Scribd' format is very annoying. Can you be a pal and put it in a PDF so we can all download without having to sign in?

Are you sure if this list is allowable to reproduce without permission?

I hadn't really thought about the legal repercussions, and I had no idea that scribd was normally used for the illegal stuff. I'll remove the file for now and will e-mail mongoose to ask if they are ok with it. If they are, I'll upload it again (on a site that doesn't require you to sign in).

Good man.

It's a decent list from what I read. It's actually a pity Mongoose haven't published such a list themselves, at least that I'm aware of. Hopefully they will be receptive to the idea of such a list being available, whether it is a commercial product of their own or a community compilation.

I just got a reply from Matthew Sprange at Mongoose Publishing, telling me the following:
Understood, but we are not too keen on large sections of our rulebooks being
released for free - if people do not have to buy them, we won't be able to
make any more!
So unfortunately I can't make the pdf public. Back to making your own I guess :)

I think Matthew is quite right, however I wish they'd get useful lists like this published so I can buy them!

I tend to disagree with the decision. When you are on the low end of a market segment (as I assume Traveller is) it makes more sense to "get the word out". Let people run wild with your product and more people will flock to it. I got into Traveller because I took part in the Judge Dredd miniatures game kickstarter for a minimal amount and got the Judge Dredd RPG pdf for free. That pdf normally retails for $23,99, so you could figure that I cost the company that amount of money. However the distribution of pdfs costs next to nothing. And the Judge Dredd RPG requires the Traveller core rulebook. So I bought that. And after that a whole bunch of other Traveller books. In other words: by giving away something for free they increased their market share of customers who are actually buying their product. In my opinion the whole mindset of "give absolutely nothing unless you pay for it", that also keeps plaguing the music industry, comes from an outdated perspective. A newer perspective, and a more dynamic view towards their product would make it more popular and more profitable. Of course I have absolutely no degree in marketing, so I may be wildly off base here :) And in the end it is their decision, since it is their product. So if they don't want me to make the pdf public, I won't.

I certainly wouldn't put Mongoose Publishing in the never give anything away for free category. Signs & Portents was going for years and offered a lot of free content, not to mention the free campaigns (Secrets of the Ancients, Pirates of Drinax) for some examples.

I agree that it can be good marketing to get the word out, if nobody knows about your products then they aren't going to be interested in purchasing them.

That's true. And of course I wouldn't be in this forum if they hadn't given me a free Judge Dredd RPG pdf. I guess I'm just disappointed that it stops there. If something like a master skill list can't even be published to benefit the users of the system, even though they themselves show no sign of publishing an official list themselves, than it kinda puts a damper on the Traveller community's activities. I have a few other projects that are nearing completion: An application to automatically generate animals by the rules of the Animal Encounters supplement, An application that automatically generates available freight, mail, passengers and speculative trade on a world, and a master equipment list. But if they won't even allow a master skill list, I doubt they will approve any of these. Too bad

You have to remember that Mongoose is doing Traveller under a license. That means there are more restrictions and more hoops to jump through in order to publish things. Mongoose is prohibited from creating software based on the game. They also cannot authorize software based on their game. You can create things for personal use, but you cannot give it away or sell it.

With the skills list, I can understand completely why they would prefer it not to go out. With that, a copy of the Traveller SRD, and some dice, you would not need to buy anything from Mongoose. If you do not buy anything from them, what is their incentive to create such an object? I have created lists like that for my own use, but I have no plans to give out to anyone outside of my gaming group.

I know most people would love to get more things for free for the games they play. Sometimes it is feasible. Sometimes it just doesn't make good business sense to the company. A lot of people would like a master skill list, or a master career list, but it is just not practical for them to make.

I had a look at the skills list. It has the skills + the skill definition.

Perhaps a compromise could be made? Perhaps by producing a skill list that lists available skills and notes which supplement the skills came from? I would find that useful - I can live with not having the skill definitions in the skill list.

On occasion I have created an extended contents for a recently purchased book and given it to MG to put on their website.

What happened to it? Other than Mongoose taking what was free and compiling it into a pair of pdfs that is sold on DrivethruRPG marked down half price and still costing $35.

I don't agree. Mongoose published books that had logical complete complications would be a very good seller, you'd still need the CRB (SRD would fall too far short) and the career books & supplements would still be very desirable.

The SRD has enough printed in it to annoy players. If they grow up and want more than what the SRD has, they can start by buying the books.
