Massacre at Zeta Epsilon-- A Fed-Klingon batrep

Nice report, thanks. I was hoping you'd have the time to do the AAR up.

Did you find the error in your cheat sheet that we were discussing?

That was a great game, Dan and it was nice meeting you and your brothers. Hopefully we can get more games in like that. Who knows, maybe the IKV Daisy Flower and IKV Petunia will show up once again to foil the dastardly Federation's plans for galactic domination. :D

Thanks, George. Just for the record though, I was the one NON brother there. Yes, Bill, I know where the error in the record sheet is. Fortunately it is only on the Dilithium 5 line of the crits section, so it was only that one crit (which we hadn't had before) where there is an issue. The chart omitted the word "end" and instead said roll at the end of every phase. I haven't cross referenced with the book yet, but that would have given Ares a chance to live. It was still most likely going to die though.

Okay, glad you found the glitch. Yes, by the time a ship is at Dilithium Critical level 5, the ship is in real trouble. Definitely time for All Hands on Deck, for sure.

Excellent story, Dan!!! I suppose this "never happened" and the Federation public was left in the dark.

Nothing smells as bad as the IKV Petunia, George! We HAD to blow it to bits with a name like that!

I didn't look close at the pictures, but you might be able to see the AHOD counter on the BBs base in there somewhere. :)

I was trying. With the AHOD order she would have stood an OK chance. With the +2 from AHOD I only needed a 3 to get down to the non escalating level. It still had plenty of shields and 3/4 of its damage or so. The volley that did it in was a roll from a D5 that put 3 of 4 Disr through the shield, did 3 criticals, and then rolled trip 3's for the location. Then one phaser (from the same D5) went through, did a crit, and also rolled a 3. That Dilithium 4 hit escalated in the end phase. Using our incorrect ruling the Ares exploded in the movement phase of the following turn.

That's how you kill a BB, I guess. It did leave us wondering after the game if all the DNs and up are a bit overcosted. Criticals are pretty regular, and while you are paying for all that extra damage you rarely get to use it. Oddly enough, our conclusion was that big ships are better in smaller games where the volume of fire (or lack thereof) lets them throw their weight around.

Edit: Can't add images apparently. I'm being told the board attachment quota has been reached.

The full report can be found here:

A well written report and some nice pictures!

I had the same problem with the attachment quota earlier today. The solution is simple. If you've reached your quota of attachments, you need to delete some old ones before you can add some new ones. :) Go to "User Control Panel", from there click on "Manage attachments", and that gets you a list of all the attachments you've posted so far. You can then choose which one(s) to delete.

that's a really lovely battle report. Great looking mini too.

Those litko custom tokens? They look great I think I might be interested in getting something just like those myself :)

Yes, those are Litko custom tokens. Once we started playing and when Drummer ordered his third fleet :) I figured our group was "invested" enough not to drop the game, so I went to Litko's website and had a set of tokens made up. We use the little blue dice for shield boosts when they are over and above the starting shield total, and the little green dice go on the base after each ship moves. We then remove said little green die when that ship fires. It greatly assists in tracking who has moved or shot in large fleet battles like this one. In this battle we actually had more ships than little green dice, so you see a couple of big green dice out there.

My next play aid is to paint up some of the SL2400 drones so we can track how many ships have fired drones at a given target.

I picked up some of Litko's "Moved" green arrows to indicate which ships have moved. Leave it in place, and remove after the ship has fired.

Drones, I use spare drone counters from ADB, but actual drone minis would probably be prettier. :)

Really good battle report guys. Love both the pictures and the interesting narrative style of the battle report itself - so much more interesting than a simple, and often dry, blow-by-blow account.

Thanks for that. Yeah the book keeping in acta:sf is a little higher than I'm used to in wargames (sure I know it's a lot less than then fedcom and sfb). But hey, that's what you get when you have a game that tries to have lots of big things in it.

I'm interested to know, what shapes and colours did you use for each special action, and roughly how many of each do you think is enough for a 'normal' size game?
