Mongoose
So I finally managed to get an Elric campaign off the ground and ran the first session recently.
Composed of:
A Melnibonean EX master of the Imperial menageries (sort of a hunter type) on the run due to being responsible for a well connected noble being consumed by one of the beats in the said menagerie.
A Shazaarian Sorceror whose lightly retarded brother accidentally killed a child in his village and both aided in escaping by the Melnibonean. The Brother is an NPC.
So only 2 players and an NPC, but my Son is joining in next time with a Mhyrryn.
So anyway, I just did something simple to start with.
They managed to book passage on a Tarkeshite ship, heading towards Raschil (in Filkhar) where I’ll start the campaign for the Cities of the Young kingdoms, Southern continent supplement.
(which I’ve run some of before when running a gaming weekend for some friends and it’s very good).
But to introduce them easily to the way the combat works, I did a small Pan-Tangian raider ship attacked their ship. I kept the Pan-Tangian pirates under-equipped as these are totally new players to the system.
I did some manoeuvring rolls of the Tarkeshite vs the Pan-Tangian ship to start with but it ended up in a Pan-Tangian boarding action.
It went well, just a few injuries, no major wounds, although there was a close call with a bellyshot with a greatsword at one stage, luckily the Pirate captain rolled minimum damage (on an open roll too)
I really love the Legend combat system, it allows for a lot of creativity in combat. There was much charging, pinning, impales, limbs getting chopped off, people getting forced off the side of the ship or into an open hold and all sorts of other stuff that other games just reduce to:
Roll to hit, roll damage, keep doing this until the enemy falls over…
I found the rules were picked up pretty quickly, although I know them well, so it’s good to have at least one person in a group who has thoroughly read and practiced the rules with test sessions. But the comments on the gaming style, combat etc were positive.
We left off with the Ship (and the captured Pan Tang ship) limping to the closest port (Vilmiro) as their ship was damaged and the captured Pantang ship and the resultant reduced crew (as the surviving Pirates were clapped in irons) .
Interesting times ahead pulling in a Lawful nation/City with a Melnibonean present and a Sorceror. Heh.
Still looking for a couple of new players, but it's a start and it's probably better to start with just a couple of players until I'm very familair with running it regularly.
