Mad Max / Death race / Dark future / Car Wars

And settings in countries other than the USA (I'm sure Car Wars did Australia, but a car-Wars-esque game set in the wilds of the West Country or (as in one of our CW campaigns when I was at Uni, around the streets of Petworth in Sussex) would be fun - techie CW style background as well as post Apocalypse Mad MAx style would be fun too.

"Car Wars" Canada, now that would rock!

All your typical Car Wars US stuff, with snow and ice to add to the mix.

It's the reason that most Northern Rednecks, think that Southern Rednecks can't drive worth squat.

"Call me when they slick down the NASCAR Raceway with ice." as I heard one guy put it. Would make things more interesting!

Let's see, where else would be interesting.

Africa, certainly. Lions and Tigers and Bearcat Armoured Cars, OH MY!

Europe, oh ya! Autobahn Militarized Zone! And the Chunnel Free Fire Zone (Nothing like a nice gunfight on a train!)

Australia, certainly! Saw off your shotgun and strap on a kneebrace!

And, finally, Sealand! Of course, you can only use Minibikes. :P

Dark Future was excellent, and someone always got taken out by the train:)

M25 madness would be a game of BF:evo with lots of cars parked 3 wide and the length of the board.

Thought I remembered that name from somewhere:

"Many phenomena — wars, plagues, sudden audits — have been advanced as evidence for the hidden hand of Satan in the affairs of Man, but whenever students of demonology get together the M25 London orbital motorway is generally agreed to be among the top contenders for exhibit A."

— from Good Omens, by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

I have a copy of "Overdrive Arena" which i like the basic rules best with the low and high gears options, the 4 gears for advanced is a little to much i think if you have 4+ cars etc on the table, with carwars i would focus on my car, and leave the rest, because of the phases....

Now....

We can do a simple basic car version, using overdrive as a template, and with my copy of "Dogfight " mongoose ww2 aircraft game, i think mix the best of the 2 together for a simple system.

My thoughts and ideas

STANDED CAR
LOW GEAR : 4"
HIGH GEAR : 8"
TURNS : 45
ACTIONS : 2 OF COURSE

TARGET : 4+
ARMOUR 5+
KILL: 10+
HITS : 6

MG 15" 2D6 1D6

LASER 30" 1D6+1 1D6+ 2
HY LASER 30" 1D6 1D10

RULES
ROLL ATTACK DICE TO ROLL TARGET OR MORE TO HIT

DAMAGE
ROLL DAMAGE DICE, IF YOU ROLL "ARMOUR OF MORE" YOU SCORE ONE HIT, IF YOU ROLL "KILL" OR MORE YOU DESTROY THE CAR IN ONE HIT.

The above is just straight off my head, but you get a idea, weapons, have ranges, some are better to hit, and some better in damaging or blowing your car up..!!!

Over to you

i think it needs a modern twist, the ability to be played in arena, along a road or evan in a city sprawl, scale wise keep it as Bf-evo so we can use toy cars, and have MGP sell conversion packs with guns and suck and vehichle crews.

rules would need to allow trucks as well, motor cycles, and lots of vehicle upgrades.

IIRC, the scale that GW used for Dark Future was "20mm" rather than 25/28 mm. The idea was that you'd be able to use Matchbox/ Hot Wheels cars as well as the official DF minis. You could buy sprues of weapons to stick on the cars. IIRC, the most recent editions of SJG's Car Wars have been scaled up to the same size as Matchbox/ Hot Wheels toys.

Here are a couple of links for you:
  • Paint Jobs from a DF fanzine -- some original DF cars and Hot Wheels conversions using DF weapons sprues
  • Stan Johanson Miniatures 20mm Road Warriors
  • A German site's article on Hot Wheels conversions
  • FFG's Wreckage which the designer originally intended to play with Matchbox scale cars -- I have a link to his old homepage, but it seems to be down. :(
  • On The Miniatures Page, someone painted up bags of 1:72mm zombies and old Dark Future minis for a zombie hunters scenario

I think that a Mongoose answer to Car Wars/ Wreckage/ Battlecars/ Dark Future would be great. :)

Driving shoot em ups have been popular for a long time, and this may well be a good bet to make, I would certainly have to consider it as my lad has been after me getting a version to play.

So until Mongoose goes with a yay or nay there is always the FREE download of Petrol heads with the gun buggy addon (download page below scroll down for the rules)

or various other freebie sets from freewargamesrules

The BF Evo inspired Technicals Death Race at Mongoose Hall was jolly good, and the rules are available for free in s&P 46 IIRC.

I have played a game or two of Car Wars way back and I really liked it but I am really a roleplayer at heart so using elements of Car Wars to a roleplaying game would be nice.

The best example is Market Forces by Richard Morgan. There is plenty of corporate backstabbing and licensed roadraging (yes, raging not racing) where custom made cars duel on highways. Those cars are armored and tuned etc. but they are not armed. The idea is to use the car as a weapon. This is most often practised by corporate execs.

Worth a read and that really wanted me to get Car Wars from somewhere and run a game using those ideas...
