Looking for players to test play-by-email.

Nice reminder. I forgot to update mine but since I have emails still stored up should be able to finish it up. I'll try to see when I can get it written. IIRC was on turn 5 and turn 8 will be pretty short to describe.

I have written up some rules to convert the game to a hex map? The idea is so that the game can be played via e-mail.
I was thinking that the game could be played via e-mail using an X-Y grid to denote locations. That would keep it almost exactly like the in-person games. Sure, there might be limits in that everything would have to be to the nearest 1/4-inch grid location and nearest 5-deg compass heading.

You could even lay the grid out on an Excel spreadsheet. A 4x6-foot table would have 192 x 288 cells, most of which would be blank. The cells for ship locations would have a simple note such as "Fed-CA #2 / 235-deg" to denote the ship ID and heading.

I think the hex grid works well and is a minor compromise from the table-top game to convert to play by email.

The biggest change is the simultaneous movement for all ships. This isn't a requirement for play by email, but it does allow games to be completed in a much more reasonable time frame. We played a few games ship by ship and they took several weeks with regular updates throughout the day. I'm guessing that the game would take about 3 months if each player only responded once per day.

well now it's movement+shooting+defensive fire+repairs=3-4 stages per turn. one per day, 8 turns=24-32 days. If it was 5 ships per turn then it would be aprox 7-8 phases per turn=8 weeks.

Albeit once ships get destroyed things fasten up but then again if you go for ship by ship movement then logically you would expect to go ship by ship for shooting too...

So yeah. 2-3 months IF you get to send one message per day and that's bit optimistic. Real life always interfere.

We have several games running right now. I'll try to put together an AAR for the battle I'm running. Turn by Turn would be confusing since we have several games going.
