Lethal Zones and funny templates

Ok, I have read all the stuff about Lethal Zones on the forum here and I have a question. Is a lethal zone a radius like a fire zone, or a diameter?

See, the reason I ask is that GF9 makes this nifty template set and has a red round template in there for measuring lethal zones. The template is 4" in diameter, and has markings for 1, 2, 3 and 4 inch LZs. That is to say that they think Lethal Zones are, in fact, a diameter.

So, a mortar has a 3" LZ. This means that there is an area of effect equal to 3" in diameter centered on the model hit... so 1.5" radius. Kind of tiny.

Fire zones are 3" in radius, meaning 6" in diameter. Auto fire zones are 6" in radius and so 12" in diameter.

Man, I am so confused all of a sudden... I thought Lethal Zones were a radius, like in the Player's Guide ... it says all models within the LZ distance from the first target get hit.

Is the template in error?

LZs and FZs are both radius. If you look at the template you can see that it's marked in 4, 1" rings, making it a radius marker.

You were right the first time. :)

That being said, I don't have one, just going on memory of one I saw. If anyone has one and they're 4" across, say something so we know GF9 is wrong.

Oh, it is 4" across. I have one. The green one they make that is triangle shaped... it is correct, but this one is a 4" diameter template.

Hmmm.... how am I the first to notice this?

Which game system?
SST: The green templates come in multiple flavors. A circular one with a max radius of 3" and an arc that was for use with nukes/firezones that had a 6". Lethal Zone was a radius in SST - pg. 40 of the rules: "A weapon's Lethal Zone size (the radius in inches) is found in the brackets next to the damage characteristic."

Old BF:Evo Modern - technically doesn't have Lethal Zones. It always specified models within X" of the impact point. Making it a radius. The template was only a 4" circle because there were no weapons that had a greater than a 2" fire zone at the time the templates were released.

W@W - I can't find a specific reference that tells one way or the other, but I assume it's the same.

You are correct though that the tick marks on the template are not well defined.

The green template is wedge shaped, with a rounded end. It is 6" long on one side and has gradients marked there for measuring fire zones and such. It also has lines for a 90 degree fire arc. It works perfectly fine.

The red one is 4" across and has three long, curved windows cut out in the 3" range (presumably because 3" LZ is very common use for the blast template) It is measuring a diameter effect though, and that's the issue. It simply cannot be used for WaW since LZ are measured in a radius, not a diameter. (It has 1" 2" and 3" circles, with 4" being the outer edge of the template)

I have both and am aware of the problem. But you also have to remember the BF:Evo one wasn't designed for W@W it was for the first Battlefield evolution rules that are now essentially out of print. I'd recommend using a marker and marking your own rings on the template or buying the other version for SST that has the larger circle if the arc wedge isn't sufficient. However, it will max at 3"

THe other BF:Evo version also has a 6" arc.

the green template seems to be the one to go with I have purchased both sets probably just use the red one as a frisbee but I do like the ready counters and covered advance counters that come in the set
