Large Silhouette question

The rule states that the target has its beam facing the attacking ship then you get the +1 modifier

how do you figure out if the beam is facing the attcker?

At my LGS we have been playing it that if the attackers fire is within the defending ships port or starbord arc then we get the large silhouette modifier...but we just wanted to make sure we were doing things right.

thanks in advance!!

That is how we've been doing it. Trace a line from your measuring point on the firing ship to the measuring point on the target, and if the line lies within the target's beam arc then it's a Large Silhouette target and the firer gets the +1 modifier.
