I've never played any Mongoose games, but I've bought quite a few Judge Dredd minis, if I turn up Saturday with some painted figures will there be oppertunities for a beginner game or 2?

There will certainly be opportunities for a beginner game or 2. The rules are easy to pick up and the games are not overly complex.
