JDMG - rules clarification - Armor Stacking

Has anyone run into an issue where someone running a cursed Earth Desparados gang chose to upgrade their mutant with +6 Armor mutation, then throw sports armor ontop of that?

that gives a model +12 Armor (+15 in hard cover) which is nigh impossible to penetrate even with a laser cannon.

I've not seen wnywhere in the rulebook where this kind of armor stacking is not allowed, I was wondering if anyone else has run into it, and if so how would you deal with it?

No, the rules do not allow armour stacking entirely. To my knowledge the only armour that stacks or rather replace your current worn armour is the force field. Beyond that you are suppose to buy better armour as you upgrade your models.

You can reference pg 17 of the JDMG core book, under encumbrence it it clearly says "one type of armour". The mutation is a type of armor. If they want to argue more that the mutation shouldnt count, refer them to the energy shield:

The energy shield had to sepcifically state that it can be worn with other armor. It had to specifically state that only one stat can be used at a time.

I know, not an out there straight in your face sentence. These should still get the point across. They did for me.

You know I don't think that we ever looked at the mutation as a "type" of armor, but more of a modification to the stat similar to leveling up. But, it definately makes sense now.

What about the Mercenary Mutant? It can buy +3 armour for 20 points, but it already has +5 armour. Does that mean you're wasting one of it's two mutations and 20 points for worse protection?

I suspect the mercenary mutant should have 0 armour. The points cost make him a standard mutant with a +10 for the stump gun.

Although the armour upgrade should probably match the one in the desperadoes list.
