Offut has flashes of brilliance, but he is deeply flawed. His writing style is smug: he makes a point in the introduction note to SoSkelos that he wants his reader to need a thesaurus: and he doesnt always use the words correctly. His story is rambling, and his Conan unconvincing (eg: he's spent the second half of the novel trying, with allies, to kill a satrap who betrayed him. Right at the end he turns on his main ally because he killed the satrap, just like he said he would. Huh?
