Integrating Runes

I am toying around with the concept of having characters integrating runes in different ways. Most of this is heavily inspired by the legend of Zelda games, but basically boils down to one concept:

Having a rune physicaly meld into a personal item, like a sword, mask, or musical instruement (like an ocarina). Now, aesthetically this is cool, but it makes it easy for a rune to get stoeln, and what if the item breaks. Now doubtless it will increase the cost of some mundane tirnkets, but I think it opens up the possibility for cool magic, like Rune Music Magic with the ocarina, or possilby shape shifting with the masks. I suppose it would not make much of a difference with weapons, would it?

Also with integrating runes, you must be physically touching htem for the spell effect or bonus, but do any of you let your players physically abosorb them into their body? I am thinking of doing this, as having to be in physicall touch with the rune all the time becomes annoying to keep track of. I mean if it is around someones neck what stops a player from being punched flat footed and robbed? At least if it becomes part of the character there is less to worry about, and it makes a cool aesthetic for the character.

One last thing: have your players integrated a dragonewt rune yet or tried to integrate 9 undead runes at once (to become a vampire)? Normally I would not let a player be a dragonewt or vamp/were myself (unless they did this).

A couple of things:

As for being robed. Once you integrate a rune, nobody can integrate it until you die. So if you get your runes stolen it means that you lose the powers and cannot cast the spells, but they are worthless to whoever to took them. Unless he tries to ransom them back to you.

If you want cool powers in an item, I guess the way to go is by enchanting the item. There is nothing stopping you from adding a rune to any item you have. As an example, the klanths (did I spell that right?) of the EWF are supposed to have a fire/heat/similar rune in their pommel that allows for spells to be cast while holding the sword.

I still like the idea of the runes being adsorbed into the character, but that would mean that you do not get the runes from the badies you kill... unless the runes reapear somehow once you are dead.

I'm envisioning a foul cult that hunts down Runecasters and skins them for their runes. It would be even worse if they have to keep the person alive while they used their runes.

Isn't that similar to the Thanatar cult?. OK, The thanasati get the heads, but it goes in that direction.

Keep em alive eh? Gives an interestinf idea to a tyrant nation army. Chain slaves with integrated runes being proded to cast magic on enemies. Like human weapons. Of course you'd need to stop them from attacking you so you'd probably need to slice bits of their face off (eyes at least) just to be safe...

That's COOL! Goes along with my plan to run a one rune campaign for each rune...

i like your idea, mage! the absorption thing is actually the first thing i thought of when i read of "integrating runes"
