I've been doing character sheets using the MS Works word processor for years, although you might want to use the database if you want something like a form.
My advice would be to use the Cthulhu Rising rules. They have everything worked out for a space setting using BRP. It's very gritty, and perfect for games like BSG.
Are you looking for a better word processor, such as Word? If so try Open Office, it is an Open Source Office suite compatible with MS Office and it is free. It is distributed by Sun with a professional install and help, etc. It also has a good spreadsheet program comparable to Excel.
Works should be perfectly adequate. Use tabs and underline for the bits like:
Name: __________
Rank: __________
I have used the underscore character for this example but I do not recommend its use in character sheets.
If you need little boxes the font Wingdings 2 has perfectly adequate ones.
I am not sure if works does columns or styles but these are useful, in fact styles are probably the greatest and most underused feature of any word processor.
It is not the best tool in the world for the job but it will produce a perfectly serviceable character sheet.
You can do character sheets in a spreadsheet and it does allow you to do things you cannot do in a word processor but on the whole it makes life more difficult.
Tables are best used only when you have to use them. I find them troublesome.
