Pavlov Grenadier
Mongoose
Hi all! I have just finished painting the rest of my IJN fleet and have posted a few pics on my website:
http://www.thewargamerspage.com/victory_at_sea.htm
I will say this, nothing is more demoralizing for me than taking pictures of my models. They look good on the table then I get these close ups…uggh. Oh well, the will have to do.
I have really struggled with the carriers. I cant draw/paint a straight line to save my life and even with edging, I did a poor job. My goal is to have someone from the PLDA (Professional Line Drawers of America) come and do them for me!
The ship models are 1/2400th while the planes are 1/1250th. The ships are from several different manufacturers. If anyone is interested, I have listed where I got them from and also wrote a small review of each at the bottom.
GHQ:

CAP Aero:
All my Airplanes
GHQ has the most detail but is also the most expensive. They have a great selection and painted pictures of almost all their models on their site.
Panzerschiffe and Viking Forge are about the same price but Panzerschiffe is a little cheaper on a few models. However, they have the least detail of any that I have seen for this scale. Now for carriers that’s not that big of a deal (big flat top, etc) which is why I tried them out. What you don’t get with them on the carriers is the planking and other small details but if you can live without that then they are almost 3 times cheaper than GHQ. They also have one of the more extensive lines of models I have seen out there. Another nice thing about Panzerschiffe is they have a picture for almost every model they sell.
I have to say, the best bang for your buck in 1/2400th scale is Viking Forge. They are moderately priced and still have great detail on most of their models (as good as GHQ in most cases for around ½ the price). However, there are a few downsides with Viking Forge.
1) No pictures on their website of the models (I was lucky enough to purchase some at Historicon so I knew what they looked like and was comfortable buying the others sight unseen).
2) You have to print and mail them your order form with check or money order (no internet purchasing). Having said that, the process worked fine and I received all the models I ordered in less than two weeks (not bad for snail mail).
3) Their selection is somewhat smaller than GHQ and Panzerschiffe.
As I said above, I purchased all my planes from CAP Aero. They have a good selection for the scale (1/1250th) and are relatively cheap ($4 for 5 planes). I put two on the base just because I love the look of the “air armada” sweeping in on the enemy.
